iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can?t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price ? we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. While Leopard's features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we're sure we've made the right ones. [Apr 12, 2007]

Apple delays Leopard (10.5) until October - thanks iPhone!

Leopard only coming out in October..
means a few things:
1) The June release date was not planned for a long time. Companies like Apple don't suddenly realize they can't make good on a release date for what is their flagship product so close to it; There have been several rumors since early this year that Leopard was going for a fall release, specially due to Boot Camp Vista integration, NOT iPhone.
2) Either Apple is skipping an entire year's worth of iLife, or simply changing its title to something not year-related. Don't count on iLife 07 so close to year's end. Making such a new product already seem obsolete by January 2008 would be marketing suicide
3) A 6 month delay? First Leopard was to be released in January. Then, June. Now, October. And Apple complains about Vista? Look in the mirror
4) Personally, I was awaiting June and Leopard to finally get my hands on a MacBook Pro 15" with Leopard pre-installed. This is really bad news for me. I already own a 24" iMac, and I love Mac OS X. Can't even consider going back to Windows. But I want a portable. Humpf.

Was there ever a formal release date for Leopard beyond "Spring 2007"? Can't see Vista related issues with Boot Camp being much of a hold up and the rumours of Win32 app compatibilty in 10.5 are just nonsense. Personally I don't imagine Boot Camp will be on the 10.5 install DVD.
Probably will hurt sales of new systems somewhat if people are waiting to upgrade and get the new OS at the same time. Still you may be able to get a Penryn based MacBook by then.

I'm happy with Tiger anyway, but will get the Leopard family pack to upgrade my MacMini and Macbook.
4 months isn't a long time to wait tbh

I'd heard rumours that the current betas of Leopard that are out there aren't up to the usual stability standards anyway, so I'd prefer they delay it if it's not finished. Word is that it's feature complete and they're just chasing bugs at this point and that devs will be getting a near-complete version at WWDC.
I'm not really bothered anyway. None of the features seem like they'll be as immediately useful as Spotlight. Although the boolean features for Spotlight and full 64-bit applications will be very nice.
