    PS3 fans on desktop

    Hi!

Just picked up my PS3. So far so good!

I notice the machine starts the fans when I use the www browser, and they stay on when I drop back to the desktop.

    Is this normal?

    Thanks!

EDIT: This is an NTSC-A unit.

      Thanks Mike.

It will be tricky to swap out, as it's NTSC-a.

      Downer.

I hope its just noisy, and not faulty.

The general consensous (sp?) is that they are just noisy and nothing to worry about. I only wanted mine swapping as the wife wants to watch blu ray movies on it and you can imagine her face if the fan is noisy whilst she is watching away

my "sell" to the wife was that the HD-DVD on our 360 was too loud.

          whooops

Still, its much quieter than the 360, just odd the www makes it spin up a notch!

          thanks again.

PS: My machine says "Made in Japan" and January 2007, does anyone know if that will be old enough for a proper PS2 chip?

Quite keen to pick up some NSTC pstwo titles.

It "should" be ok but I can't say 100%. They announced the change after then and there would have been all the stock to clear before they sent the newer models to retailers.

I'm not sure why but it seems quite normal for the fan to switch on while browsing online. Seems strange when you think that it can't possibly be working that hard doing it.

It's normal for the fans to do that with the original units. The newer non PS chip versions don't do it however.
                Kept you waiting, huh?

But as you've probably read on this forum...some of the UK PS3s do and some fans seem to be stepping up to full speed when the PS3 is doing nothing at all???

Ahhhh! Thats great to finally find out if I had a bad US unit or not.

Its not that loud, but the first 5 minutes are really what I would call as "Silent"

As it stands the unit is too loud for Blueray playback for "Quiet scenes", but I can live with it.

I wonder if there is an easy way to find out if your unit has the PS2 chip or not. I haven't managed to buy any US ps2 games yet!

Try folding@home. Just leave it for a while. You should notice that the fan speeds up and down every now and again, and it gets pretty loud sometimes. Once you quit back to the XMB it should slow back down after a little while. I don't think there is anythnig wrong with your unit however.

                        Have you tried calling Sony?
I'm not sure if they'd tell you but surely they would have details of what type of PS3 your serial number was registered to?

Thanks guys. I wasn't sure about calling Sony as it was import, but I can of course call the US.

You could email them to make it cheaper.

My US PS3 has similar fan patterns to yours CS, I thinks its quite normal and even at full speed, its much quieter than my 360.

As far as I understand all US/JPN PS3's still feature hardware backwards compatibility - is this not correct? I'm sure I read the move to software would be in April/May this year. I'm sure there would have been a whole load of information/comments from the US sites detailing the good/bad when moving to software. I tried a bunch of my US games on the 6 week old PS3 I have and all run perfectly (and nicely improved over the PS2 I might add).
