    Burning DVDR's at a slow speed isn't recommended....Especially if they're 16x compatible dyes.

The Whole slow burning = a good burn is a complete myth with regards to DVD based media. I get no end of C2 and PO errors when reading back discs burnt at 4x. The same discs burnt at 12x give much better results.

If you're interested in getting to understand how to "Truely" understand what a good/bad burn is then I suggest popping over to the CDFreaks forum and reading there.

It's weird, then, that when I've done fast burns I've ended up with coasters with audio that skips and when I do slow burns I get stuff that works.

I'd look at your burner then. It's too indepth for me to explain on here but if you're seriously interested then pop over to CDFreaks and learn how to do scans etc.

Or compare your scans with other people that have the same drive.

Each DVDR burner prefers certain media, it's impossible to say that 1 media is better than the other.

I don't tend to buy 16x media anyway, purely because my aging standalone Panny DMRE85 hates them, so 8x is what's I likes, and burning at low speeds has served me better. Believe me, I've got more than one burner, and I keep my firmware up to date, and burning at 8x with 8x media has given me **** results (on my Philips DVDR1628, which is my newest burner).

I had a 50 stack of those Verbatims, and I think my failure rate, at whatever speed in whatever burner, was something like 1 in 3. I'm quite prepared to believe I had a **** batch, but I tend not to go near media again after a bad experience.

The Yellow Datawrites use the Ritek G04 dye which by all means is a very good dye. Compared to T Y's though on a grand scale of things there really is no comparison and scans on DVD Burning Forums show this.

The information i'm providing is based on not only my experience but also the opinion/proof of many media scans (which provide much more detail than a simple "verify" of a burning program.

Giving your opinion is obviously valuable but just because you've had a bad experience with a 50cake box doesn't justify saying that Verbatim TI's have gone **** recently :S

Thanks for all the help guys Jay - I already ordered these Verbatims from play, will they be ok for the time being? ; http://play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3337518/Ve...e/Product.html

Secondly it would appear in true timely fashion my DVD burner has died! Can anyone recommend me a good budget DVd burner? Preferably external as i have zero knowledge of replacing PC components . Ta.

                Hi mate,

Yeh they'l be fine, They're the same as these here (Read other peoples opinions on them at the bottom of the page.)
Dedicated to providing tech hardware and services to end users. From individual users to corporate customers, we work hard to provide outstanding, personalized service. Products range from ink cartridge tablets to servers! Pricing and products to meet every budget.

As for recommending a burner then it definately has to be the Pioneer DVR-111 or 111D (The Latter of which doesn't have RAM capabilitys but they're the same drive so if you ever needed it just crossflash it.)

I'd seriously reconsider getting an external drive though....replacing a burner is really easy and there's tons of guides around. Failing that i'l be passing Hertfordshire on my way to a mates in a couple of weeks if you want me to pop over and do it for free.

Bigpockets have the Silver One in stock.

The Pioneer DVR-112 is the newer version that came out over here a couple of months back. Up to now the scans on the burns are excellent but if you want piece of mind i'd definatly pick up the 111.

                Jay

I can live with 80%. That's loads better than I get if I put in me girlie's name.

I'll shut up about those Verbatims now because I obviously don't know what I'm on about.

Except that they don't work! HAHA!

I have a bog-standard Sony dual layer DVD rewriter here, does the job very nicely, burned a lot on it and still going after some time..

External drives are costly, unreliable and pretty much pants.

Like what james said, very, very easy to replace, literally four screws to keep the drive fixed to the case, and two cables.. one for power, one for data.

Could have very easily been fakes. Where'd you buy the from?

SVP. I only ever buy from SVP or BigPockets. They must've just been a bad batch. I just don't have the money or faith to buy something again after I've been burnt :/

If you told SVP they probably would of replaced them from a different batch or with a similar product. They're pretty good about that. I asked once and they sorted the duff discs I bought with a full refund no questions asked.
