[PS3] Help me navigate display settings blind

Hi all - basic situation is, I took my PS3 to a place I normally stay during the week. I got my HD TV here, so I want to try some HD TV gaming . Silly thing is, I left my Scart cable back home and it's a bit of a journey, so I can't change the settings in SD and change to HD cables.

So, can anyone help me with a guide to navigating the settings "blindly" in order to get Component cables to work? I have version 1.70 installed. I took out the game disc, so when I switch it on, I should automatically start at the PS3 interface.

    1) If I press left a loads of times, it should take me to "Users"

    2) From there I should press "Right" once to take me to Settings

    3) I don't remember whether display settings is selected immediately, but if I press up loads of times it should take me to the whatever option is on top and I can count the number of down presses to the "Display" setting (unless, the menu cycles, at which point I am screwed)

    4) can anyone help me from here?

This might really be useful for others in an emergency! Thanks!

Just hold the power button on boot. It'll put you in safety mode.
    Kept you waiting, huh?

I read that too, but apparently, it will "restore the default SD setting" after which "You can then use the Settings category in the XMB to configure your Display settings manually." i.e. go through the whole swapping cables lark if I understand correctly.

I tried to reset (hold power button for 5 seconds) but I still get a blank screen. It's a shame, my Samsung doesn't seem to detect 480i (or 576i whatever it was) via component.

      EDIT:
      IGNORE ABOVE

Sorry I'm an idiot and obviously couldn't reset the console properly! You are right, my good man!
