    Blu Ray/PS3 game questions!

    I'm about to buy a UK PS3...

Games are region free, correct? Can I get some details please?

Blu Ray is NOT region free, correct? If so, or if not, again, some clarity would be brilliant please

Games are region free and SOME Blu Rays (I think most are actually) are region free, but quite a few are not. Off the top of my head, I think Fox and Disney are always region locked. I forget who released it, but my USA copy of Saw III is region locked and won't work on a UK PS3. But my copy of Good Night and Good Luck (Warner) is region free.

I saw a web site earlier with a list of Blu Rays which are region locked, I'll try to find the link again.

There you go, that's a pretty good list of which Blu Ray discs are region free and which are locked.

So there really isn't a negative aspect of buying a UK PS3?

I'm not TOO fussed about movies anyway, but games being region free = cheapness.

Yeah I'm pretty sure all the games are region free, I haven't see any reports yet of games that haven't been region free. The only problem is finding a place that'll send the cheap Asian games to the EU! Still, with the £/$ exchange rate getting American games should save a pretty good amount anyway.

Also, baring in mind my tv CANNOT do 1080p but can do 1080i...

Will the component cable (bought seperately) be ok for the hi def signal, or do I REALLY need HDMI, my 360 looks fine in component, so I'd assume the ps3 looks ok too?

No idea about that mate, I've only used my PS3 over HDMI. I don't think there's a huge amount of difference though, the picture from my 360 over component, PS3 over HDMI, etc., all look really lovely.

So it should be ok in theory? Any problems with non-hdmi blu ray playing? I'd assume not since it's bundled with composite!

It's just I'd rather spend £13 on a component than another £30+ for a hdmi switcher.

If your TV has a HDMI port, then I'd suggest you got with that - I used component for the first day, and got a HDMI and found it much better.

And they only cost ?20 at Gamestation or even cheaper than that on ebay.

The only disadvantages of a UK machine are less backwards compatibility because it uses software instead of the 'Emotion Engine', although if you don't have any US or JPN games then this won't be an issue. Secondly, I think there was some talk of a batch of the Euro machines having loud fan problems, but I assume they can be replaced if it becomes a big problem.

One more thing to note is that a UK PS3 cannot play a lot of US/JPN games on a SDTV because it doesn't have an option for 480i as it includes 576i instead.

Well I have a HDTV but it doens't do 1080p so I'll try component (my deal comes with a HDMI cable anyway!). I meant a HDMI switcher...I see em for ?30-40 on amazon who are usually pretty good price wise!

I only plan on playing God Of War 2 and FFXII on PS2 anyway so back-compat isn't an issue.

Final question for the moment : Headset wise, what do I need? Are they ALL wireless?

The first one is wired, the second one is wireless (nice price there!).

The review says it's pretty bad though

I'm not sure I'd have enough people on my "friends list" to warrant it at the moment! How does the wired work, same as the 360 and it plugs into the pad?

Thought of one more question!! Whilst downloading from the PSN store, can you play games etc or is download or do nothing.

Been researching this console a lot, if it had video/audio streaming from PC it could be very very ****ing good!
