Core pack with existing premium HDD, can I keep my content

    Hi All,

As topic: My 360 trl'd again and while it's fun wasting 2 hours of my life stripping it and blasting it with a heat gun I am thinking of a more long term solution.

Can I just buy another 360 core package and plug my 20gig hdd in it and keep my xblive account, save games and xbla games and points? Or will it reject it all because it's linked to the ID of my machine (thanks MS, cheers for that one...)

    Cheers,

    Olly.

The way their DRM works is that it's tied into both your machine and your account.

If the machine matches up, it doesn't care, and the content works on all accounts on it.

If the machine doesn't match up (HDD on another system etc) then you must be signed into the Xbox Live account it was purchased with. If your connection drops, the content disappears, and you can only access it with that account.

Cheers Andy, this is what I hoped and had previously read, but wanted to be absolutely sure!

Has anyone been in the same situation and done it?

Yep, my premium died a few weeks ago. I bought a PAL core to replace it and plugged the HDD in and can access everything as I could before. The only possible difference is my profile is saved to memory card.

You, if I'm reading this right: you place the h/d in the new machine and all works fine, but you're h0sed if your ADSL connection drops? If your connection drops, is all your content permanently deleted.

It's not permanently deleted, it's just inaccessible. So if you've downloaded the trial for an arcade game and then unlocked the full game, for example, while you're signed into XBL everything is fine, but if you sign out all you'll be able to access is the trial version. I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

Yeah, that's how it works. If you're offline, arcade games just become trials, and content disappears from the games. As soon as you're signed back in you can access it again.

How about Saved Games, are they accessible even if not signed into Live ? Or is it just Downloaded Content that becomes unavailable ?

Saved games just require the gamertag to be accessed (offline is fine)
