Treb try http://www.unlock-dvd.com/ for all things region unlocking.

Most region mod chips are auto switching now.

You have to call some phone number? What's that about then?

Sony DVD's are notoriously single region. Unlucky.

The Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo Ones fuzzybee recommended are great speakers for the money. I'm running four of these for my surrounds with the matching centre and Evo 3 floorstanders at the front. They're a great range of speakers especially the Evo 3's.
You should definately think about taking a listen to them. May push you slightly over budget but they're worth the little extra.
www.hifibitz.co.uk sell them at decent prices and have a few different packages.

As for the dvd player Sony players can't be hacked like some others but can be modded.
Check the model number and take a look at the list here http://homepages.force9.net/grahamas...indexhome.html
              Also check out www.techtronics.com

Both sites offer modification services and have prices for diy mods, i think techtronics also has a section on the site with "how to" instructions.

Remember the Super Starwars Series on the Snes and a certain quote Vader made when you collected one of his heads

                  Impressive !!

Seperate AV amp/receivers have a single phono/RCA line out connection for sub connectivity(some amps have two so two subs can be connected), subs also usually have L & R inputs on the back to connect them straight to the L & R speaker outputs on an amp.
Connecting it this way only gives LFE effects from the front two main channels and is usually used for two channel music so for multi channel Home Cinema use should be connected to the specific Sub line output, thus giving LFE effects from all channels.
Some sub/sat speaker packages come with a multichannel amp inside the sub itself and need all the speakers connected to the sub but thats another story

                      Hope that helps

*brain struggles to take it in* i think i got that, i'm not after a huge home cinema setup, just a pretty loud 2 speaker setup with some decent bass... listening to music through my tv highlights just how weak the speakers on it are.

thanks though, i'll get some magazines and doa bit more reading so my next question won't be quite so 'simple'
