Why do PAL cube games look so bad on my PAL wii / HDTV?

    ok

I felt like playing some RE4 the other day, on my pal wii.

It is connected via a 3rd party component cable I got for about ?8 on ebay, I slide the disc in, connect me memcard up etc and pad, play for about ten minutes. I noticed its got like a 'canvas' effect where if you stand still, you can plainly see its sort of 'matte' looking.

odd to explain, could it be because the wii is set to 16:9 ? no idea.

I try the RGB scart cable for wii (official) and it looks the same, only less sharp.

so , the next thing for me is to unpack my old pal cube with official RGB and see if it looks the same. I have a Panasonic Viera 32" TV.

I hope it doesn't look the same

    any ideas ? I'm stumped

I guess it'd be better to make this thread after I've tested the cube, but yeah

RE4 does look like that I'm afraid, real bad on an LCD screen. Twilight Princess has the same 'matte' like problem.

Resi 4 looks pretty bad on a HDTV i have the NTSC version and i understand the effect your describing.

PAL GC will look a little blurry due to the fact it does not have prog scan and will basically be outputting in composite.

try another PAL game as well just to make sure.

Prog scan makes a massive difference on my LCD in comparison to games that don't support it (resi series and others) while not a GC game okami looks awful

Are you zooming it to fit your 16:9? The GC doesn't output RE4 in proper widescreen (unlike things like SSX Tricky). It just chops the top and bottom off. Yes really! So on a 16:9, it stretches to fit the screen and is basically low res rubbish. Not sure if this is what you are seeing, but it can't be helping.

I noticed this with all my consoles when I bought my first widescreen telly. The picture looked awfully grainy and all the colours were washed out or looked darker, especially the reds. It's basically just where the TV is having to stretch the picture to make it fill the screen. Using the aspect ration button on your TV remote to switch to 4:3 will make the picture look as it should; in fact I find the picture with GC games is much sharper on the Wii than the GC, even through composite.

nah, I changed the aspect to 4:3 and it looks the same, I don't think I can win!

I'll defo try the cube tonight though, I did try it on 'zoom' but meh

Smash Brothers looked great on the Wii (PAL) back when I actually owned one. Much clearer and sharp than the Wii games I owned lol.

Problem with the Wii component cable however, is that whichever way you look at it, even an official one won't produce a huge difference than if you were using the RGB scart.

Turn off digital image enhancements and all other filters off your TV. (This is a common complaint with Samsung TVs, who have their DNIR filters turned on by default.)

Most Cube games, and many Wii ones even, use a lot of dithering and other effects that aren't nearly as noticeable on an interlaced display as they are when running in progressive scan. Most games seem to turn on a flicker-filter when you're running in 480i too, which blurs things and makes it even less noticeable.

It's nothing to do with running on an LCD, if you ran it on a CRT monitor in 480p you'd see all the problem there too. I'd personally stick to 480p though, as the flicker-filter on 480i just leaves games as a blurry mess, in my opinion.

It's simple, playing a 480i game (or in this case 576i) on a HDTV will look bad, If you're gonna play it then I'd stick to a old CRT TV for older games.

RESI4 just looks like balls in 480p, even on a crt. end
