    Ipod viewer equivalent

What's the best Windows program for getting music off of your ipod?
A friend has asked me how to do it as he has bought a new laptop and wants to put the music he has on his ipod onto it.

I use ipod viewer on my macs, so something like that would be good.

Can't he just tell itunes (in preferences) to treat the ipod as a hard drive, then he'd be able to copy the stuff off of it? Or would he rather not use itunes? If so, he could just use it for accessing hies tunes and then uninstall it.

On macs at least, you can't get music off an ipod, only delete it. It's to stop illegal file sharing.

I think it's the same on Windows.

sharepod is great and you can leave it on you're ipod, it's only around 1 meg.

is cool if you take you're ipod around with you and don't have access to itunes, great for net cafes etc.

I use foobar2000 (www.foobar2000.org). Its a nice music player, and has a very simple iPod plugin called foo_dop.

I believe winamp already contains a plugin that will allow you to use your ipod through and save files on hard disk (while saving them with a meaningful filename).

                [1] don't install itunes

                [2] plug in yr ipod

[3] look in my computer, make sure that you can view hidden folders

[4] you should be able to navigate to a folder full of weirdly-named 4 character long filenames, which are your MP3s. The ID3 tags work, so you can work out what's what.

You probably need to have disabled all the copy protection stuff when you put the music on though.
