    quiet pc

so, I have changed my power supply, changed to a quieter graphics card but my pc is still howlin like a wolf

I assume its the cpu fan and the case fan?

If so, then does anyone have any recommendations on the best models/makes?.

My mother board is an asus p4p800 - does that make it socket 478?

    any advice appreciated

What PSU and GPU specifically did you change to, out of curiosity?

I've managed to make my PC near-silent, but it wasn't cheap, you really need to focus on everything, not make the mistake of thinking 'that doesn't make too much noise' because once you make one component quieter, it just makes another component more audiable.
And people also forget that smaller fans are louder!

Passive cooling on the motherboard is a must, as these have tiny little fans which makes a real racket, and rattle more and more over time.
Passive cooling is very common nowerdays on motherboard.

CPU fan, Scythe Infinity, I swear by it myself. Huuuuge heatsink, and nice, big, quiet, low rpm 120mm fan

Case - people often forget this. I have Antec P180's for both my machines... expensive for a case, but you can't them for silence and cooling (which is important too, as some fans spin louder at higher temps).

Don't know what PSU and GPU you have, I assume you won't wanna be replacing these after just buying new ones. I have a Seasonic S12 PSU, can't hear it.
Also be aware stock ATi cooling is very loud, but stock Nvidia cooling is some of the quietest cooling I've heard (or not heard!), even if it's is large.

HIS cards should have the IceQ cooling system, which is pretty damn excellent, so your GPU cooling is more than fine.

Forgot to mention, if possible, case fans should be 120mm.
Depends how much money you wanna lay into this tbh, a decent case with 120mm fans like the P180 is really the first step imo.

ok, so the psu i got was 430w Tagan EasyCon - TG430-U15 - 2Force Silent Modular PSU

so i'll get the scythe cpu cooler. should I replace the fan on the case too?

I dont really want to go as far as changing the case

Fair enough. I'd say go for the CPU fan at the very least.

A 120mm fan might not fit on your case, depending on the screw holes. You can get quieter 80mm case fans, though they're not as good as 120mm's.

http://www.silentpcreview.com/ is an excellent place for this kind of stuff.

              nice one

ill cpu fan and change the case fan. that should do it!

              thanks for your advice

For case fans, I suggest Papst...I have three fans (1x80mm, 2x120mm) and together they produce less than 50db. Pricey products, but defenitively worth their price.
For the GPU, you can use Arctic Cooling products. They require you to disassemble to original cooler, but they are much, much quieter than the stock coolers. I use the Accelero X2 on my X1950pro and they also produce a huge passive heat sink as well...X Bit Labs put online a review of the cooler and they say it works.

Also if you quiet down the fans the hard drives might start sounding loud. Then you might want to suspend them with elastic or detaching them from the case some other way so they don't transfer vibrations. I got mine lying on foam on the bottom of my case. Once again http://www.silentpcreview.com/ is a wealth of info on this subject.

thanks shakey jake and everyone who commented

I just installed the heatsink and fans you recommended and everything is soooo much quieter

it was a bit fiddly to fit due to its enourmous size (at least twice the size of old heatsink/fan) but I got there in the end

                    woo!
