PS3 DVI and sound - n00b questions ahoy

i have finally crumbled and decided to get sony's onyxian console despite being a devoted 360 fanboy.

i am a total n00b when it comes to TVs so i could do with some advice some you crazy kids.

my current tv is doesn't have component but has VGA and DVI. my 360s connect to it via the magic of VGA but sonce sony haven't blessed us with a VGA cable i need an alternative.

as i understand it, all i need is a HDMI cable and a DVI converter and it should work.

    right?

so how does this work with sound? what cabling would i need to get sound? my 360 vga cables both plug into a jack that goes into my surround sound. there is also a jack socket on my tv for such things.

sorry if this has been asked before, i did a search and couldn't find direct information.

    thanks for you help

Use composite cables for the sound. There's an option to output the sound via the AV cables.

EDIT: Also, don't buy a HDMI cable and a converter. You can buy a DVI to HDMI lead that will do the job.

Your TV may have an audio input for the DVI source, or you would have to hook it up to your external speakers.

Either use the Composite cable and just wire up the Red/White from that into the sound system (leave the Yelllow one loose), or use optical.

I grabed a hdmi>dvi cable form ebay, I use the multi out with the composit that pulgs in by the dvi on the tv (samsung) & it works great.

Be a bit careful with DVI and HDMI. AFAIK, the PS3 causes problems with screens that have DVI slots that aren't HDCP compatible. Make sure yours is fine.

thanks for your help everyone, much appreciated

what problems does it have if the DVI isn't HDCP compatible?

edit: i just found the spec of my TV.

it makes no mention of HDCP. looking at the linky above, do people think i'll be able to hook a ps3 up to the DVI port?

              A blank screen.

The PS3 outputs an HDCP compliant signal even when playing games.

If that's the case, you'll just have to use Component, but I think it's very unlikely it won't be HDCP compatible.

Assuming this is the same TV, one of the reviews says it is.
