you put the ps2 into standby mode, then turn it back on by holding eject for about 5 secs (until the sony entertainment screen).
of course you'll be wanting to play your games with the chip on, but yeah it'd save a lot of head scratching by taking the chip out of the equation before physically taking the chip out of the equation
and you're right, the dms3 site is useless for finding the sleep mode on dms3! i found it out first as it mentioned something in the troubleshooting but didn't specifically say what to do (just that if the chip doesn't turn on cos it thinks you're holding down eject) then i just googled and found the answer.
