360 wireless headset not picking up my voice

I've only tried this on Crackdown and Halo 3 so far, but whenever I speak into my wireless headset, it doesn't pick up that I've said anything. The voice icon in Halo 3, for example, doesn't change to the little speaker, and the only way I can get it to work is to angle it very close to my face and practically shout down it.
Now, I know the mic itself works, because I recorded a message and played it back and it picked up my voice perfectly, even when I was whispering; however, I imagine that recorded messages are set to record for the whole 15 seconds, rather than activating when it detects a loud enough sound, so would I be right in thinking that there is a problem with the headset's sound level detection making it not 'listen'? Is there a sensitivity setting that I can adjust? I don't want to start shouting down it all the time and I need it to be reliable.

Anyone else have this problem? The old wired headset is fine, but that's much closer to my mouth obviously.

You know in Halo 3 in-game you have to press the d-pad to speak? You probably do, but just checking

Yes, but this happens in the lobby and also in Crackdown. It must be a sensitivity issue, but I don't know how to adjust the settings (or if it's possible).

It may just be a general problem with the headsets, mine's very quiet for other people (or so they say) yet it's really loud for me through the headset for their voices...crazy.

It's not quiet, it's just not activating unless I shout into it. That can't be right, surely.

            My headset is the same.

It has to be pretty much inside my mouth before it activates. When it gets going or recording a message it is fine.
