    Laptop advice please guys

    Hey all,

Well I think the time has finally come to retire my 3yr old Toshiba Satellite Pro as it's generally dog **** & as slow as a very slow thing with a good reason to be slow on a slow day

I've been having a quick look & following advice on the PC Spec thread yesterday have decided to probably go for a Dell & came across this little beauty...

Dell provides technology solutions, services & support. Buy Laptops, Touch Screen PCs, Desktops, Servers, Storage, Monitors, Gaming & Accessories

& was just wondering what you thought??

Seems like a great spec for a fairly good price to me.

The Laptop is pretty much solely for t' Interweb & some Anime downloading.

Although with that gfx card will I be able to do a bit of gaming?? (Thinking mainly C&C 3, Neverwinter Nights, Company of Heroes)

Just wanted your opinions before I wnet ahead with the purchase...although if you know anywhere that has a better spec for similair money then feel free to recommend away

    Thanks in advance

    Neil

That's using onboard graphics with memory nicked from the main system RAM. Probably not much good for gaming.

The processor won't be as fast as an equivalent Core 2 Duo.

Doesn't appear to have any wi-fi or bluetooth.

    A bit ugly IMHO.

Size and weight aren't outrageous but is that important to you?

Can't knock 2GB of RAM though.

Low resolution for the screen size.

No firewire - only a problem if you have a camcorder though.

So thats a "look harder Neil" then

Can you recommend anywhere else to search for good Laptops??

I'd love an Alienware one but no way in hell I can afford their prices when I'm trying to build a Media Centre PC as well.

Looks to come with a Dell 1390 wireless network card although nothing else special about it apart from the 2GB ram which seems a bit excessive in balance against the rest of the specs.

          Hey Neil,

I've got one of those dog **** Toshiba Satellite Pros myself

In fact it's the sole family of 6 computer!

When you do upgrade, pm me if you'd like me to take it off your hands for some beer money

            Ooopsie

It's not that it's a particularly bad machine...mine just deosnt seem to have aged that well (Celeron 2.6ghz & 256mb ram)
It takes forever to boot up & mutli tasking is pretty much non existent.

I actually start the machine & go make a cup of tea by the time I'm done it's just about loaded & ready to get the 'net, then it takes ages again to connect to the net

It's done me fine but now I think it's time for a newer machine.

I'll let you know when I do get round to it though

            Neil

              Cheers mate!

In our house, the speed is less of a problem than the fighting over who's using the computer next

              All the best, Mark
