Seriously irritating problem with Windows XP

Ok, i'll try and explain this as best I can...

There are a few music rhythm games that i'm trying to play on my laptop (AMD Turion 64, 1.6ghz, 1.25gb ram, ATI Mobility Radeon X700), however recently some problems have started arise, and i've noticed it in a number of circumstances.

Everything is running better in Vista, than in Windows XP.

Example: Sega Model 2 emulator. Which, while running at 100% CPU load in Windows XP, jutters and stutters like mad with popping sound. In Vista, it's smooth as anything.

A few games like DJMax and Burst A Fever, which rely on you actually playing the notes in time to the music in the background, keep getting thrown off sync, and the simplest of games are juttering and stuttering everywhere, while on Vista everything is working fine.

It's not always happened, and has only recently started happening.

I've tried to use my recovery CDs to restore the PC to it's default settings and this hasn't helped.

I've tried using a program to force the CPU to work at it's maximum frequency no matter what, and that's made no difference either.

Virus check through 2 different scanners, reports no viruses. I've tried ctrl+alt+del to shut down ANY processes that I possibly can, including SYSTEM processes that don't shut the thing down, and they make a small improvement but it still happens.

    Any ideas...?

I have a higher spec laptop than the one you have and some music games even stutter on mine in XP. I installed the same game onto my PC and it worked fine. Very odd which I can't explain either.

Does it make any difference if the laptop is running from the battery compared to plugged into the mains?

What sort of energy saving settings does the laptop have? Could be the processor speed is being altered to increase the battery life.

I had a similar issue which turned out to be a codec problem. It was plaguing me for quite some time before I figured out what it was.

I should've noted that during all of this it's been plugged into the mains.

Magnakai - What codec did you install/uninstall to resolve it? Any more detail that might be of help?

I'm sorry, I don't know which one it was. I just had a big codec pack installed. When I removed them all (which was quite laborious), the problem went away.

I believe it was the K-Lite codec pack, if that's any help.

Of course, if you've haven't installed any such thing then I guess your problem could lie elsewhere.
