Why didn't the PC react when I plugged the router in via the ethernet cable? I would have thought something would have come up on the screen.

Am ringing AOL now to see if they can help.

It's not a plug and play device, that's why!

Now you've plugged it in use your web browser to access the router settings.

AOL are not gonna help you with this!

        Just read the sodding manual!

Like Charles said, it's a computer in it's own right.

It's also a modem (ADSL) and needs to have a few details to be able to connect to AOL.

          Normally:

          ADSL type
Username (sometimes email address, sometimes a random number)
          Password

The username/password AOL can give you, the same for the router settings.

          From http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/AOLsetup.htm

          Settings:
Connection Protocol: PPPoA (VCMUX or VCBASED)
          VPI: 0
          VCI: 38
          (VPI/VCI): 0,38
          Authentication: CHAP

The Following settings are set to automatic or get automatically from ISP,
On some routers you may have to leave these fields blank:
          IP Address
          Subnet Mask
          Default Gateway
          Domain Name Server (DNS) Addresses

          MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit): 1400
          MRU (Maximum Receive Unit): 1400

          Username: your [email protected]
          Password: your password

            3. when the 192.168.0.1 screen appears, find where it says log-in and type admin for both the username and password.
The username should be admin and pass password, If I recall!

            Within this menu/options page...

Basic Settings within the NetGear router pic

...you'll need to input your AOL username and password mate if you haven't already.

Also, each time you add a new device (360, Wii, etc) you'll need to authorise it via the MAC address, couldn't find the right page as I'm in a bit of a rush but check all the menus. If you don't authorise the MAC address of the device then the 360 (or whatever) won't be able to use the router for net access/connection.

If you can get your PC online then the rest is easy! Make sure you have it all set up correctly via the routher, check your username/pass is set up etc.

Get the router plugged into the wall, using the stuff I put above get your username and password into the router via the link alreayd posted...once you done that, save your settings and reboot the router...

It might take up to a minute but you should have at least 2 gree icons...

            The power icon
The "i" with a circle around it, the tick may also flash yellow whilst connected then finally flash green once when it's done.

If you don't get the green "i" with a circle around it, you're not connected.

Once THAT is sorted it should be as simple as plugging your pc into the router or setting up the wireless card and we're away.

Also, I'd disable WEP for now, at least until you've got some net access, if you can't use your network because it's not online, nobody else can either so it's not worth worrying about. Once you have your PC set up etc, then get it secured via WEP and THEN get your 360 onto the network too.

            Forgot to mention!!

Start menu -> run -> ipconfig

Is your friend too, it'll tell you all your dns settings in case you need em.
