good choice for cpu there mate, 2gb of low latency ram(with good overall timings) would be slightly better than 4gb(which if i recall the timings are really slack).

will help your fps a little bit more. what gfx card you going with?

I'll be asking about which RAM to buy closer to the time mate, but I don't want **** RAM, I'd rather pay a bit more for the decent stuff. I have £100 for some RAM so will probably ask you guys what's best to get.

All I want for a GPU is basically any PCI-E nVidia with 256mb RAM minimum so that I can get 60fps out of WoW. I'll look into something more recent once Starcraft II comes out, or when I pick up Supreme Commander. I'll be looking at spending £60 or so on ebay for whatever the latest nVidia card is I can find... later on I'll upgrade that to the best possible card for the board once they get evolved out slightly.

I might be selling my 360 at this rate. It will never get played again after I've built this PC, that much is for sure.

      -----

I'd really like to wait for PCI-E 32x to come around but I bet the motherboards are going to be stupidly expensive. I'm really feeling the sting at the moment with WoW.... 2.8ghz P4, 1gb of RAM and an 8x nVidia 6600 (256mb) running in a 4x AGP slot. The GFX card should piss this game almost single-handedly but the 4x slot is holding everything back, something I'm afraid of with (the now pretty much dated) PCI-E 16x.

if you only want 256mn gpu memory the ati x1950xt 256mb goes for only 100 squid or so on www.overclockers.co.uk

for memory here a few decent options in the 2gb form:

the thrid one is a set of g-skill with unbelievable timings for ddr2. g-skill made some of the best memory back in the ddr days too.

here are the two x1950xt options, both are available at ocuk right now for incredible value:

they are selling the xt variation at the same price(and cheaper in some cases) than the inferior pro iteration.

        hope this helps you.

oh and dont worry about pci-e x16 man, they have only been taking off since end of 2005 ish, and x32 mobo's are mainly sli, where the slots both have x16 each.

basically speaking x16 will be plenty for anything, and the likes of you processor gfx card, will outdate before that. i'd say that mobo's have the longest shelf life in the pc world tbh(other than psu's obviously lol)

OK mate, cheers for all of that.

That G-Skill RAM looks + sounds sexy... could possibly afford to get 4gb of that tbh.

Also that ATI Radeon X1950 512mb looks like it should last me pretty much forever.

          ---

This is all so much better than buying a PS3.

            Antec TruePower Trio 550W PSU
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)
Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
            Asus P5B Deluxe WIFI Socket 775 Core 2 Duo P965 FSB1066 DDR2 SATA Audi
            Connect3D ATI Radeon X1950 XT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI
            OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC
            Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86ghz) Socket 775 Fsb1066 2mb Cache

Above is the gear i bought recently, cost about 700, probably get it for less now.

I overclocked the cpu to 2.4ghz(1.86 standard), and there is plenty of juice left in it, could go well over 3ghz if needed

Playing WOW at around 100fps(in ironforge!)
LOTR online max graphics at about 60 fps
Vanguard Saga of heroes max graphics!(which is a bitch to run) at about 40-50fps

Just to give u a rough idea. Hope it helps in your desicion.

Strange your more interested in having 4GB RAM over getting some form of GeForce 8800 (instead of the X1950). I'd say that would be more beneficial.

I agree that you should get quality 2Gb ram and a DX10 GFX card. I think that will benefit you much more.

100 quid on ram? I spent almost 170 quid on 2gb of pc2600 ram last year!

In Japan from a shop called PC Depot. Just to add, I did see the same memory module for 40 quid last weekend!

sorry to hijack but I need some advice. PC's just died and thus I need a new one, trying to look to the future i.e a system that runs bloody Crysis.

This is what im looking into building:
                            Gigabyte GA P35C DS3R Core 2 Board
                            Intel Quad Core Q6600 CPU
                            Corsair 2GB DDR3 DHX 1333C9DHX
Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty Professional 7.1 Soundcard
                            BFG 8800 GTX 768MB
Samsung 500GB SATA II 7200 RPM HDD
                            Pioneer DVR-112DBK 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer
Antec P180 Advanced Super Midi Tower Case
OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply

                            so here are my questions:

                            1. how would the system be with a Dual Core rather then a Quad?
                            2. What's it going to be like in terms of noise?
                            3. Any thing else I should consider?

                            Thanks

i "think" possibly buying each individual part it will work out to be more expensive then just buying a ready made thing

Really? which manufacturer would you suggest buying it complete from?

                                Thanks
