XBox 360 Tearing Via VGA Cable

Looking for some advice as the problem I'm having is slowly driving me mad!!

I've been using the official Microsoft VGA cable with my 360 since the latest update and I found the picture to be superior to using Component cables.

When playing some games I get tearing across the picture:

(Not my shot but it's a good example of what happens. I seem to only have one tear across my screen though)

I've played around with the settings on my 360 & TV but I just don't seem to be able to avoid it whatever I do.

Could I stop this happening by using a VGA to HDMI converter? Would there be any loss in quality to the picture which means I'd be better of using Component instead?

If a converter resolves the problem I would buy one of these: DVI to HDMI Adapter - DVI-D Female to HDMI Male - Gold. Is that the correct type of adapter for what I'm after? If not, what would I need?

I'd really appreciate any help on this as it's really annoying the hell out of me now!!

quite a complicated mess this one.
tearing on some games is down to how it was made... Dead rising and lost planet for instance. At standard resolutions (720p or 1080i/p) the games run without any tearing, set them to anything other ( 1280 x 768 for example ) and you will get heavy tearing.
Most games shouldnt tear tho, on my panel at a non standard res i get no tearing ( except for the two games listed above ) but on a friends pioneer he gets tearing on everything, including videos.so unfortunately it comes down to the panel and not just the machine.

as fo the vga to hdmi conversion. Not likely ( i hope someone can correct me on this because id like to set it up this way to ) but vga to DVI is possible as DVI can carry analogue and digital signal. HDMI on the other hand cannot and is Digital only. so trying to feed a vga analogue signal to it will not display the image, agian tho if someone can prove this wrong iwould be more than happy

There'd be no point in converting the VGA (Analog RGB) signal to anything else because it already has the fault, so the converted signal likely would too.

All you can do I think is use Component.

Coincidentally, I just got a 360 for the first time and got the Elite version - was playing dead rising via HDMI and saw no tearing at all, and I'm very sensitive to it. I can't believe how common it seems to be on the 360 - very sloppy looking.

It's Dead Rising that is now causing major problems for me, whatever settings I use!

I used to have the same issues with Gears of War but that doesn't happen now and I have no idea why.

Yeah Dead Rising and Lost Planet both have VGA tearing issues regardless of the resolution, it's the output that causes the problem. I hoped they'd have patched it by now, but I'm considering going as far as buying a component cable (I gave mine away to a mate when I got my VGA cable) just to work around the tearing issue.

It is generally just them 2 games I get the problem with though. Out of the 20 or so I own.

I had tearing issues with my 360 & Samsung LCD when I first got them back in December 2005. I had to update the firmware on my Samsung LCD. You could have look around see if any issues with your TV maybe.

i get tearing all the time using if using 720p via VGA, even with DVDs, using the maintain aspect ratio option on my DELL LCD monitor (native res of (1920x1200), 1080p solves the tearing but creates a new problem, very strange horizontal lines across the screen. incredibly annoying.

Yeah It is mainly just those 2 capcom ones that suffer from VGA induced tearing, everything else that tears, tears on both VGA and component

Samsung LE32R41B, right? That was the TV doing the tearing and not the 360 so was a separate issue (talk about a miniefield...)

Thanks, I'll see if I can update my firmware later!

Does anybody know of any "issues" with the Bravia KDL-32V2500 like there was with the Samsung LE32R41B?

I had Lost Planet when it was released (SD TV then) and I really didn't enjoy so that won't be a problem for me! Hopefully, Dead Rising will be the only game I have problems with then...it would annoy the hell out of me if Fable 2 & Mass Effect had the same problems though!!!

No, there were no tearing issues with that one (or any other LCD that I know of other than the Samsung LE--R41B, for that matter). The problem's with the 360, not the TV.

                        Thanks Lyris!

My friend who owns an indy games shop claims that he has been advised to expect Elites to be in stock "before the autumn" so I may be able to just avoid the issue by buying one.

I'm not completely sure if I want to be spending that much money as my launch 360 is still working although I can't see it lasting that much longer, Maybe I'll wait for the 360s with hardware revisions before I buy one...

I only bought an Elite because I'd never owned a 360 before, and this seemed like a good time

I didn't think the Elite was coming out in the PAL territories? That's interesting.

I don't think it has been announced for here yet. He did seem genuine and did add a "Don't ask me how I know" at the end lol.

                            I'm glad you're enjoying it!!

I'm a little cautious about them as from what I'm reading, the failure rate doesn't seem to have changed since the original version. I've had few problems with my launch machine compared to others but I'm still cautious about spending that sort of money.

There are plans to release the Elite in Europe, they just havn't been set in stone yet. As I'm half considering switching over, but I think I'm more interested in the potential benefits of the newer chipsets they're meant to be unleashing on the market this winter for the potentially far quieter operational noise and such.
