DS multiplayer q

I'm sure I've read that 2 identical games from different regions will not communicate with each other. I'm also sure I've read that wi-fi compatible games will communicate with each other regardless of region. Could somebody confirm for me please?
I'm trying to play Mario Basketball 3 on 3 with my son in multiplayer. Mine is the JPN version, his is the PAL one. They don't seem to wanna talk to each other, but erhaps I'm doing something wrong.

I had a failure to communicate when trying to play SMB multiplayer with someone at work. I have the US version and she has EUR. Don't know about the wi-fi ones though.

I'm afraid that you're spot on, J0e.

Unless Nintendo DS games are compatible with the Wi-Fi Connection, they won't communicate with each other if they're not from the same region.

Like Paulos G, I've had this problem with New SMB - trying to link a US version with a UK version doesn't work.
