    Router / Live help please

Networking etc is not one of my strong points.

Anway, had two PC's and a 360 all connected up via a wired router, Tuesday evening my broadband went down for 48 hours. Comes back up Thursday and refuses to work through the router, Broadband works fine if connected directly to either PC but not the 360 (tried using Auto and Manual connection detection types, cleared previous IP/DNS details etc).

Easy solution I hear you cry - reinstall the router intallation disc etc, but can I find it ? no

Searched online via belkin.com and google and no joy, really trumped now and stuck for ideas. Any help appreciated, the router in question is a Belkin, model no. F5D5231-4

If someone can get me back onto Live even for now, rather than sorting the router for now I'll be a happy man again.

Will look in a minute to see how far it gets with the Live Connection test and post it here.

EDIT: IP Address, DNS isfind fine but Live get stuck on the MTU bit.

    Thanks.

I'm not an expert David but on the two occassions I've had MTU failures it turned out to be a temporary problem that fixed itself. I suspect it was an issue with the ISP rather than the router.

The one time I did have a problem with my Belkin router I emailed their customer support and they got back to me with an answer within 24 hours.

Will drop them a line, tested it and broadband is working at full throttle, but still won't pass the MTU test, thanks.

Righty, to access your routers settings, plug your PC into the router with a cable and type 192.168.2.1 into the address bar.

in the internet/wan tab tab there should be a box for MTU, this should be 1492 for it to work properly, if it doesn't say that change it quicksharp and save the settings
restart your router from the setting within these menus(do this even if you hadn't made any changes)

If that doesn't work you could try saving/backup the router's settings (which will create a little config file for you to keep safe) then choose the option to restore factory settings , then once this is done restore your own settings or even better fill them all in again manually.

You could even update the firmware whilst you are here, that could fix any problems that you may have.

Exchanged a few PM's with Boris and am 99.9% sure the router is knackered, would something like this be suitable for Live use also ? (with Virgin if it makes a difference)

I'm with Virgin (previously ntl, previously Diamond Cable) and have been using Belkin's F5D7231-4 router for Live since December 06. Other than getting my NAT Open (which Belkin sorted for me) I've had zero problems.

I am back in the world of the living (aka Xbox Live), only taken almost a week blah blah blah. The above router (£28 from Maplin) sorted me out good and proper in the end. Virgin & Microsoft were as useful as a prostitute wearing a chastity belt.

Will post pics of old router meeting the hammer tomorrow, wonder if smashmyrouter.com is still free \o/

Thanks for the help lads, and to the guy who PM'd saying I could have his spare router for the cost of the postage, warms the cockles it does.

The problem is that my pc, which is connected with a wire in a LAN port, cant get internet access! I can ping it so the connection to the pc is fine. What am i doing wrong? Hope this makes sence?!
