GT Electronics - anyone used before?

As title really - sent them my Xbox last Monday for repair when the drive stopped reading any disk that went into it. Problem I now have however, is that I've heard nothing from them, I don't even know if they've recieved the console or not because being the cheap ass that I am I opted for standard parcel delivery and so wasn't given a tracking number.

I've told them over the phone that I don't have a tracking number but they say because of the number of consoles they get in they can't help me. Their site does make clear however that they should contact me to confirm they've got it, but are they only likely to do that once they get round to working on mine if there's a back log?

dvdx2 used them and said they were great, iirc.

They fixed my PSP and did a great job. Zero complaints with them whatsoever. I would *really* struggle to believe that they'd try to con you over a broken Xbox.

Sending a console in Standard Parcels really isn't a good idea though!

I sent a 3 red light 360 to them for repair and it went tits up again after 10 days of getting it back. I returned this to them again and they sent it back to me. Within 4 mins the 3 red lights started. Emailed to complain and got a full refund for the repair (but lost money on the postage sending it to them x2).
(specifically asked for it to be well tested and obviously it wasnt)

I felt the customer service the first time sending was good - emails to confirm they received it etc, but the second time was pretty dreadful. A young chap did phone to say they had received it but i had to phone 10days later to see what was going on. They had no record of the console, but it luckly showed up next day.

I think they are swamped with 1000's of 360 and thats were the problem lies.

The issue has now resolved itself, got a phonecall last night confirming that the console was ready and that I should sort out payment - still don't understand why they didn't contact me to confirm reciept of the console but never mind.

I always use standard parcels for posting consoles for the simple reason that its over less than half price of the next day or whatever. Standard parcels also allows me to specify the item's value and insure it, so if it does go walkabouts then I get back more money than the console is worth

Hmm use a courier delivery, then its online trackable, insured up to £100, next day and cheaper than Royal Mail anyway... RM's prices for heavy parcels are ludicrous.

With GT Electronics, I bet they get loads of really simple repairs, and then some not-so-simple repairs, I suppose thats why they just refunded you as they felt it wasn't repairable / they had spent enough money on the fault and wrote it down to one of these not-so-simple repairs..

TBH though, anything made by man should be repairable by man.. !

OT I know, but that's the trouble. Most electronics devices are made by machine, not man.

I'd much rather pay more for standard delivery with the PO than with an ebay seller that doesn't even have paypal protection.

Just looking at dvdx2's post has me worried for my own machine now. Got the console back this morning, fired it up and the "new" drive that was inside it would only play movie dvds - whenever a 360 game disk was inserted, I'd get an error message telling me to insert the disk into a 360 (lol). In the case of original xbox BC titles, they wouldn't even load at all.

They have assured me that the machine was tested using a game, so how exactly it goes from working to not working in the space of a few days is anyone's guess. I just hope that it only takes 1 return to get the problem sorted out properly - I certainly won't be using them again after this.

The 360 wasn't even returned to me in the outer box it was packaged in, instead the invoice was stuck to the front of the 360 box which was taped up and now looks a complete mess - they have all the carefulness of a troll.

Sorry to hear about your 'box....
Sounds like they failed to insert your motherboard/dvd key into the firmware of your 'new' 360 dvd drive - this causes the xbox to only play movie dvd's. I think they may be fibbing if they said they tested it with a game, as the firmware cannot 'lose' it's key and cause these symptoms.
Hope they kept your original key/dvd drive, as this is tied to your motherboard - it's impossible to extract it from the motherboard only as of yet

Oh god, not really what I wanted to hear - they could have done anything with the old drive.

I suspect they're unaware of this fact at GT - do you mean to tell me I now have a useless 360? All I need now is for them to turn around and tell me that they can't repair it, refund my money and wash their hands of it - leaving me without a console and **** all I can do about it

Hopefully (sorry to panic you!) they've got it stored - in order to fit a new drive you extract the m'board key from the dead drive and insert it in the firmware of the new one. Can't see that they'd offer a service like this if they didn't realise this, so this might cheer you up . Also if this was the case you'd hopefully have grounds to ask for a working 360 from them as it'd be their own incompetance that caused your 360 drive to not play games.

On the off-chance, they may have fitted a new laser unit to your existing drive and it's not getting enough juice to read game discs - this is unlikely tho'
Hope it works out - don't personally trust any repair centre as most of them use the heatgun method to fix the 3lod's - sadly it's generally a temporary fix.....

Do not use Gt Electronics. I sent them a PS3 with a minor fault and it came back a right off.
They are techenically inept, will not answer the phone, slow to answer emails and have little concern for the customers. They quote 2- 3 days turnround but nearer a month which may be OK if they could fix things.
They are a company to avoid
