Wii & maximum SD Card capacity?

I'm thinking about buying a larger SD card for my Wii as my 1GB card isn't going to last forever with all the VC games I'm buying.

I've read in different places that their is a capacity limit to the SD cards that the Wii will accept but I've read that the limit is anywhere between 1GB to 4GB.

Does anybody know from experience or from Nintendo officially what the limit is?

Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere else but I've not been able to find it.

    EDIT:
Added a poll to see what size people have managed to use.

2 seems to be the highest I've had confirmed. I've read arguments on other places where people are saying 4 but I want to know for sure before I spend my pennies on one.

Thanks for letting me know and if anybody has used more than two please post here...

I'm using 2Gb. A 4Gb SD should work but they are quite rare.
This is not to be confused with SDHC 4Gb which do not work.

BTW. Why would you need more than 2Gb?

I'm not sure if I do need more memory but I'd rather not have to download games again and worry about the amount of photos on my card.

This isn't so much of a problem now but if other games such as the rumoured Neo Geo downloads happen at around 350MB a time it's going to start getting annoying.

Hopefully we will also have the option to download Gamecube games later too...an external HDD/flash memory drive would be needed for that though.

I doubt there'll ever be games that big. Theres only 256mb of memory inside a Wii and you can't run straight off an SD card.

But wouldn't it just load the relevant level data rather than the whole game like other consoles do?

Didn't the CD version only have about 64Mbs of RAM? That figure could well be wrong but it was around that amount I think...

The neogeo games are pretty small. The specs allow for a max rom size of 716megabits which is approx. 89Mb. Most carts come in well under this though.

Personally thought i would rather have a number of smaller cards as I have found the reliability of SD to be less than perfect.

What sort of size were the disc games on the Neo Geo? Was there much of a difference?

What do you think the chances are of Nintendo releasing some sort of flash/hdd add on for the Wii? There are constantly rumours flying around but it just doesn't seem that likely to me.

A cheap 10G mini hdd would be plenty for me and there are a couple of USB ports to be used.

the disc games were large only because they used cd audio tracks. the actual game data itself was pretty minimal.learned a bit from messing about with the neo geo cd emu on the psp.

p.s, also i think long term nintendo will allow playing of games straight from the sd, at the end of the day they are console locked anyway, so it makes more sense to do that than to start releasing addons etc. 2g card can go for under a tenner these days...

I'm hoping that they will allow loading of games from cards, because as you say I can't think of any reason not to.

It's easy enough to download the games again but it's just more convenient to be able to just select a game and play it straight away.

What do people think about the chances of Gamecube downloads? They'd have to think of how people are storing the games if they did sell them.

I think they'd be more likely to reprint games than release them on VC. I reckon it may happen once the Wii has been around a while.
