Yeah, if you can get a modded PS2, then you're really spoilt for choice. Horizontal, vertical & platform shooters are all in plentiful supply.
Gradius V
Espgaluda
Mushihimesama
Ibara
Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou
Homura
Metal Dlug 3,4,5
Gunbird 1 & 2
Plysvariar
Trizeal
Shienryu/Shienryu Explosion
Contra
Strikers 1945
Plus many, many more.

Although if you want to play Ikaruga (my own favourite from the current generation), you're going to need a modded Dreamcast (on which you could also play the stellar Under Defeat and Border Down) or a Cube/Wii.
But yeah, the PS2 is the one to go for if you're looking for the broadest range. Superfamifreak's first five include the best horizontal scroller for years and four of the toughest bullet hell games you could wish for.

If your getting ikaruga get the gamecube version as it has the slowmotion option which is good for helping with the chains.
Im not sure how good the pal realease was of ikaruga but even if you get an ntsc us/jap copy it will be cheaper than the dreamcast copy anyway.
I totally recommend psyvariar for ps2 its a gem of a game and totally the best cheapest blaster you can get. Plus the pal version is excellent with 60hz inc. - Although only get it if you like to try new things as its not the usual blaster were you blast everthing in sight.Last edited by Pilotwings; 25-06-2007, 15:10.

If you're talking retro, go for a MegaDrive or Super Famicom.
The Dreamcast has a good selection of great shooters. The PS2 has loads; especially in Japan.
It's hard to say which is best. I'd personally go for a SFC and Dreamcast, but seeing that I own all of them, and loads of shooters for all of them, I can say that you'd have a lot of shooter fun with whatever you choose.
