New Xbox 360 drive problem - any ideas?

Ok, after some really annoying delays on the part of GT Electronics, I finally get my 360 back this morning. The original fault I had was that the drive wouldn't read any disks. A replacement drive has "kind of" sorted the problem, but its created one just as worse. The drive will now read disks, but only movie DVDs - if I insert a game disk (and I have tried region free ones) I get a message on a white background telling me to insert a valid xbox 360 disk into the drive (or something to that extent) in a number of different languages, a message similar I would guess to that which would appear if an invalid region disk was inserted.

I'm beyond angry as it most likely means another week and a half trip back to the "useless" GT Electronics (clearly the new drive was not fully tested) and more money loss to cover postage

Someone PLEASE re-assure me and tell me that this problem can be remedied with minimal fuss.

Anyone? I really don't know what to do - Sending it back to GT would be a better situation than sending it back to MS who will charge me £84 for the refurb but its just the whole mess of the situation thats getting to me. Why would you not test a fresh drive with a 360 disk????? Maybe they did and the console's been further damaged in transit, but I don't understand how a drive can half work. It should either work completely or not at all.

Like I've said, there's no way its a different region drive as I've tried crackdown in it with no success. Another worry I have is that if I have to go through MS, will they realise I've had it already modified with a fresh drive by GT and refuse to take any responsibility for it? Worst case scenario for me would the most likely one in which GT shirk all responsibility as well and just refund me, leaving me to send off letters to both companies with the promise of Trading Standards action.

Write a letter of complaint to GT. When I've had to return things, I've insisted that they cover postage both ways, which is fair enough, given that it's essentially their fault.

EDIT: When I talk of returning things, I mean to other online retailers.
