    Moniter Resolution

Friend is getting a reasonably high-end pc. as he's into PC gaming quite alot and wants everything to run well and get the most out of the games graphically.
    but only a 19" (4:3) monitor with a max resolution of 1280 x 1024

Would he be better off with a higher resolution monitor for gaming?

He told me his brother in law (Who has an alienware pc) that 1280 x 1024 is all you need.

That will probably do most pc users quite well, remember that as you increase the resolution the framerate will drop

1280x1024 is pretty reasonable, but I would be going for a 16:9 or 16:10 monitor these days, rather than a 5:4 LCD if it's for gaming.

If he can afford it I'd say go with higher res, I have a 1600x1200 panel myself and the difference with 1280x1024 is quite big also in terms of space to place windows and such. Widescreen panels seem to be the standard these days though, most are 1400x1050 or 1680x1050.

Just make sure he gets an LCD screen with good pixel response time.... or else he'll only see 30/40 of the actual 80/100 fps being generated.
