AV Famicom region compatability

I just had a quick search but there seems to be no answer to my relatively simple question: is the AV Famicom region free or simply restricted to Japanese carts (due to shape, size, etc)? Would I require a bridge adaptor if one happens to exist for that particular model?

I rather like the prospect of being able to use an AV connector instead of an RF lead and I have a modest (though easily repurchased) selection of PAL NES carts I wouldn't mind using with it if at all possible.

It's not region free and you need an adaptor to play US/UK? games.
