    Installing windows 2000

Ive got to install windows 2000 on a machine thats already got loads of crap on it, i cant use a boot disc, as windows 2000 doesnt let you create one with which to format with. But apparently putting windows 2000 in the cd drive on start up will let you format and reinstall windows. Is this the way to do it as im not to clear with 2000.

    Yes.

Start the machine up and press the del key right away to get into the bios.

Change the boot order so that the computer attempts to boot from the CD-ROM first and then save and exit.

When the computer attempts to boot (with the win2k cd in) it will ask you to press any key to boot from the CD - do this.

Then you can format/delete partitions and install win2k.

Make sure that when it reboots during the installation of win2k you do not boot from CD again (just dont press any key, or go back into the bios and change it to boot from C drive first).

No longer do you need to worry about boot discs or whatnot since Win2k (and Win XP) - hurrah!

There is a DOS utility on the 2k/XP disc (forget where) which allows the creation of boot disks. You simply run it and it prompts you for each disk as it goes through the motions. For 2k you'll need 4 formatted disks, 6 for XP.

      IIRC.

Yep you are right Stu. If you look on the cd there is a folder called bootdisk where you can create them using the provided program called makeboot.exe
