Can't get online through cable modem

This is a longshot that anyone can help as I'm asking on the behalf of my ex and probably don't have enough details.

They have cable in their house and used to have a router which worked fine, the router broke so now they just have a modem which can only connect to one PC at a time by ethernet.

It works fine on her housemate's PC but not on hers. When I was round the local area connection in the tray had a problem saying that connection was limited and she should check her settings. We couldn't connect to anything at the time but she's managed to connect to sites at other times without changing anything.

Any idea? I can ask her for more details.

This is because the cable modem only allows the network MAC address of the first PC that establishes a connection to it. To get around it, you'll have to unplug the network cable from the housemate's PC, unplug the modem from mains and reconnect so as to reboot it, then connect it to the PC you want to use it with instead. Unfortunately, you're gonna have to repeat this every time until another router is bought.
