Xbox 360 Elite - sound problem

Hey everyone, I've had this problem ever since I got my Elite but it's only worried me until now.

Basically, whenever there's really loud/repetitive sound in a game, the audio will cut out. I'm connected via Optical, and the "DOLBY DIGITAL" signal text on my amp's display actually flickers on and off when this is happening.

I first noticed it on day 1 during really busy gun-fights in Halo 2, but my amp was out of view at the time so I assumed that it was simply a glitch with the Xbox backwards compatibility. Then, during the helicopter scene at the start of DEAD RISING, I noticed it again (although I haven't been able to replicate this).

Has anyone else had this? I don't think the problem is with my amp or cable.

A lot of people have a problem with 360 optical sound in general, caused by the fact that the optical connector at the 360 end is a load of ****e, and seems to cut out quite bad if not exactly correct.

That said, mine magically stopped cutting out one day - no lie.

That makes me feel better, it being ****e rather than defective ****e. I'll wiggle it around a little. Thanks

Interesting. I've never had any problems with the optical outs on my component or VGA cable and I do switch between them from time to time for certain BC titles.

Certainly is. My official VGA cable's connector is crap, the cables don't even lock in.

If I just plug them in they just fall out, my cable is held in with blu-tack.

Mind you, that works like a charm.

Ahh, Im glad people have mentioned this and surprised there wasnt internet uproar about it, it seems every other fault causes controversy these days.

I had to try about 3 different cables before I found a decent fit but I may spend more to get a really well built one.

You might have to take a knife to your optical cable and trim some of the plastic off. The 360's connection is really tight, and I had problems with cables staying in before I did this.

I've never noticed a problem with two consoles and the official component thing. I'm not saying there isn't a problem, just chipping in about its widespreadedness
