Asking those who have the addon, Im here in the states and with the deal coming up on the day I leave the country Im tempted with the excellent exchange rate to buy a HD DVD player for my elite machine ive pre-ordered end of August (for those wondering, the HD DVD deal is 5 free HD DVD's and the machine for $180). I'm using a 24" samsung HD TV for my gaming needs and was just wondering, is it worth splashing out for it?

It's a good drive and a excellent price.
However, since I got a PS3 I only use if for HD-DVDs whereas I used to play normal DVDs in it as well, but because of the 360's volume I find I have to turn the sound up too loud for us. Personaly circumstances obviously cos we have two young children!

You have to take into consideration that the HD DVD drive (when playing HD DVD's) will push the console harder than any game on the market.
Unlike a standalone HD DVD player, the 360 uses software emulation to accomplish playback. Its extremely taxing on the system (especially the CPU). Unlike a game which makes the system resources fluctuate depending on what is going on in-game, a 2hr + movie is like a sustained assualt on the system that requires all of the resources all of the time.
Here is a quote from someone on the development team -
All 6 of Xbox 360's hardware threads are hard at work while playing back an HD DVD. At the moment, the player software pushes Xbox 360 harder than any other (save, perhaps, Gears of War during some particularly busy parts of the game).
Its a very effecient way to kill an already fragile system.
