XBOX360 hd-dvd drive on xp pc! problem!

Just purchased the hd-dvd drive for the 360 to use via usb on my xp machine. dl'd the udf toshiba 2,5 driver and followed the instructions etc, but the drive is only appearing as a dvd drive in "my computer" and the driver number doesnt match the driver number on the udf file?

i have a feeling it just the basic windows optical disc driver, and that my system is somehow not installing the proper driver.

right clicked the info file and installed from there(as instructed) but it just egg timers for a few seconds, then ......nothing. no confirmation, etc.

wondering what i should be seeing in device manager, and if its normal for the HD-DVD drive to appear in "my computer" as a dvd drive?

    any help appreciated.

My Computer does show it as a DVD Drive, even in Vista.

Stick in a HD-DVD - can you browse the files on the disc? If so, all is good.

Why not just install some HD-DVD playing software, put a HD-DVD in the drive and see if you can play it? o_O

I'd seriously suggest not buying any from shops - they're just WAAAAY over priced (by as much as about £10!) compared to 'net prices. Movietyme do some next day delivery ones if you can wait?

But if you really must get one in the shop then the Pirates of the Caribbean films have great picture quality. Few more suggestions over in the HD DVD Best of the Best forum in the TV/Movies/Music section.

Two bits of software to enhance your viewing pleasure
                  Power DVD Deluxe

                  AnydvdHD

Anydvd hd removes all the hdcp stuff and will let you playback HD DVD or BluRay on any screen over any output. You can even back up BluRay discs to your harddrive and play them back in powerdvd, most of the discs I have are around the 25 - 30 gig mark. So you could run out of space quickly.

I don't think there's any software to run HD DVD's on a PC with the 360 add-on, other than the Japanese version of Intervideo's WinDVD, which you have to buy. I tried many different HD programs with no luck.

It does if you use the software in my post - just gave it ago.

Does it physically not read the disc? If that's the case, you need to install the UDF 2.5 driver for Windows XP.

You do then need some playback software. I think you need an older version of PowerDVD (7?).

^^ Careful with PowerDVD 7.3, though. The 5105 update they released broke HD-DVD playback and films will start to lose sync while you watch them. The PDVD devs either weren't sure how or weren't motivated to fix it (seeing as it was around the time BR won 'the war', I wonder if it's the latter). People were talking about ways to run multiple copies of PDVD7 (so you'd have the old one for HD-DVD and the latest one for BR) but I've had no luck doing that and gave up.

I was using AnyDVD HD as well and even with that running I started having problems with newer HD-DVDs refusing to load and many BRs getting fussy and often having graphical glitches (which would disappear if I closed AnyDVD). Of course, if you're not playing BR on the same PC then it may not matter, but if you are then you might want to be careful as I think PDVD would want to update itself for newer HD-DVDs as well as BRs.

I'm going to try WinDVD as I hear that's better for combined HD-DVD and BR playback, although nowadays I just watch BRs on my PS3 as it's less hassle.
