    Laptop recommendations

Can anyone tell me how the range of core 2 duo chips works for laptops, i.e. what order they are in? The desktop range is easy to understand but I've got no clue with laptops. Deciding how to spec a machine at the moment.

Same boat as you mate. Looks like the bigger the number, the faster the processor! The numbers don't seem to directly relate to the speed of the processor(s) though. From what I can gather, it's probably worth avoiding the AMD dual core processors, and going for the Core 2 Duo chips as you mention.

Bloke here is complaining that one of the Core 2 Duo chips that he has isn't properly 64 bit though?

Narrowed my selection down to either a Rock Xtreme 770, or an Alienware M9750 (probably go with the Rock - slightly cheaper).

Edit: Will say the one thing that's scaring me at the moment (and I'm not even buying it for games, just development!) is the whole DX10 vs DX10.1 issue that seems to have arrisen! Wondering if its even worth getting a DX10 card in the laptop?

The laptop processor names are confusing.

Further to the above stuff can anyone recommend any laptops around the ?500 mark. It would mainly just be used for Internet/office stuff but the ability to play games would be good. A Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM would also be good. Yes, I want the moon on a stick!

I saw a good Acer on Comet's web site recently for £399: Duo Core 2 1.66, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HDD, 15.4" screen, wireless enabled, Vista Home Premium Edition.

I'm very happy with my Dell Inspiron 6400 and the Inspiron 1300 I bought for my girlfriend. Both were purchased last year.

Tip for dell's site, if you can specify just 1gb of ram (or even less!) then do it. You can buy the same ram cheaper off sites like www.crucial.com

There was a whopping £300 difference in 4gb between dell's price and crucial's when I looked at one last week.

They're alright, but over priced for what they are. You're definately paying for the name with a Vaio.

(he says having just ordered a Lamborghini VX2S laptop....)
