    PS2 memory card problems

My ps2 is at the moment refusing to detect my official memory card in slot 1. I dont know if there is a problem with the memory card or the acual slot on the ps2 itself. I noticed that the card frontend seems to be a bit thin, i did buy it from the amazon marketplace, but i dont remember it being like that when i had one before. especially when i compare it with my ps1 card. any ideas fellas?

ive marked where it looks thinner.

EDIT: Just so you know that my ps2 is a jap scph-30000 model and its only really badly happening to the american version of persona 3, i have one of those old hk messiah 2 chips. ive experienced it doing it on other games, but it usually works if i pull it out and put the card back in.

I didn't either, but I guess these things happen. Just out of interest, what was the last game you played? Mine died after playing Double Shienryu and then an internal card on my PS3 corrupted after playing the same game.

persona 3. It will read the card fine on the ps2 startup, but in the game itself it will search for it, but doesn't find it. I had it happen a couple of times of KOFXI(PAL) and some others, but would work fine if i took it out and put it back in.

I'll just have to import a us slim i guess. Just have to wait till i have some money to spare. :/

I've heard of entire PS2 cards being corrupted by some particular game saves but never heard of a card just not being detected. Can it be accessed, read, used properly from the main PS2 'Browser'

All the problems I've ever had with memory cards have only been with third party ones for the PS/PSOne and all have been mechanical. Manufacturing tolerances/standards are variable. I've had cards that I almost have had to force into the slot and others that are held very loosely. But the main problem was simply wear and tear. If you regularly remove and replace your cards the contacts can simply wear down.

I learned years ago that it's best to leave the cards in all the time until it's full. Since I've done this I've not had any card problems at all.

That's what my money would be on - simple worn, damaged or dirty contact on the card.

Maybe try to gently bend the contacts in the slot upwards to increase surface contact? Also open up the memcard (if it's fixed by a little screw) and try to clean the memcard contacts.

Right, ive sorted the problem guys. I just bought a new card instead and it works perfectly, this time from GAME.

On closer inspection the faulty memory card is a fake, its slightly a light colour of black, some of the information on the back of the card is different and the packaging when i bought it was smaller and not longer than the plastic packaging for my new card.

I dont usually get duped in these things but the sheer quality on the replica made me think it was official. Anyways ive contacted the seller on marketplace and if i dont hear anything soon i will take it further with amazon.

Thanks for the help guys, im glad i dont have to purchase a new ps2 now.

The seller could be unaware too. Was it sold as new? Did it come in an apparently genuine unopened sealed official pack ie. was the whole thing fake? There are slight differences even in genuine official 8mB PS2 cards depending on their source.

Assuming it was bought recently all you need to do is return it under the Amazon returns systems and mention distance selling regulations. You should have no trouble getting your money back.
