Xbox 360 HD-DVD VGA Resolution Confusion

    Hello,

I have recently bought the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive. I'm running my 360 via VGA to my Sony TV which only supports 720p or 1080i. I'm currently running it in 1268 x 768 which I believe is equivalent to 720p? Is this the best resolution avaliable to me for HD-DVD and games?

    Its all so confusing..

    Thanks Carl

Yeah that'll do you fine, if you really want to squeeze a few extra pixels out of your TV you can set it to 1360*768. Although the difference is so minimal it's barely worth debating if it is any different.
You'll probably need to set reference levels to the middle option too, in order to get the blacks a bit blacker.

Great, thanks for the quick response. I shall now enjoy some HD movie action.

On my Sony Bravia TV, I have resolution set to 1360x768. Reference level should be set to Standard.

If it looks a bit too bright, I found the default VGA levels on the TV are too high - I have mine set to Backlight 5, Contrast Max, Brightness 38, Colour Temp. Neutral.

Different colourspace levels. Basically, PC's and TV-orientated stuff have different colour levels. The 360, quite rightly, outputs PC colourspace levels over VGA.

However, depending on your TV, you may need to use the Intermediate or Expanded settings.

Standard is correct on the Bravia though, as can be proven by using the test image andrewfee posted a few months back.

With Dreamworks and Paramount snubbing Blu-ray - may have to invest in a HD add on for my 360 - running into my Tosh 37WLT68 via VGA at 1280 X 768.

It's a worthwhile investment, £99 in GameStation, and you can use it on a PC too, so your killing 2 birds with one stone.
