    Xbox 360 MTU Connection Error

My Xbox won't connect to Live, I haven't been on in a while but haven't changed any settings. Been reading about it on here and it just seems to happen for people. Well I got an Elite today and still have the problem. I think it's due to my ISP.

I'm with talktalk free broadband, I'm ment to get 8 Meg but once phoning the found I am only getting a 512 connection. The guy said that on the 12th of Sept the exchange would be upgraded to 4 Meg. Would this upgrade sort my MTU out?

I was thinking of getting BT Unlimited broadband soon, do BT users ever get an MTU error.

    Any advice appreciated, thanks.

MTU is probably more to do with your home equipment than your ISP. How do you connect your Xbox to the internet - through a modem, router or PC with internet connection sharing?

If you read this page on Xbox.com it explains why the console might fail the MTU test. As it says, the MTU setting of your connection hardware (i.e. modem, router etc) must be at least 1364 to work with Xbox Live. If you connect through a modem or router you'll need to reconfigure its MTU size to at least that number. If you connect through your PC, this page here has a downloadable tool to change its MTU setting and explains how touse it. The page is from Tiscali but the principle applies whatever your ISP.

Ive had the same thing happen to me MONTHS ago mate with the MTU error. Just out of the blue too, just happened, and I hadn't changed any software, hardware or settings. To resvole the problem I have to connect my 360 straight into the modem which involves having a cable dragged through the house!

Virgin Media are having nothing to do with the problem, saying that the connection is perfect on their end. Which seems fair enough to me since it works 100% when I plug it straight into the modem. But when I use the router, the MTU fails. I've replaced the router for the exact same one again and the same problem occured, so I have no idea why this happens.

I've got a new router on the way now, so hopefully it'll fix the problem, if it doesn't then I'm completely lost as I dont know how its happening either.

      Its a strange one!

I've had that randomly happen before, MTU errors for half an hour then it'd be fine.
I think the ISPs are to blame half the time

This has been going on for a few days solid now, from what I know, could have been even longer.

At the moment i'm connected directly plugged into the router/modem (Netgear) through cables that run through the walls though. Well I tried plugging it in direct with a one meter cable (and no walls) and still no luck.

I have looked for an age and can't fine out how to set the MTU on my Netgear, and I'm not even sure if it is that, since I've used the same router/modem when it was working.

I guess all I can do is wait till the line is set to a faster speed, if that fails then go with BT who will then upgrade my speed and send me a home hub.

Called Talktalk today and they said it wasn't a problem with them, called Netgear and turns out it was a problem with my router, the MTU was set to 1300. I have no idea how this changed, I set it to 1400 and it works great now.

Just for anyone's referance on my Netgear router the MTU setting was under the headline WAN Settings, that's where you change it.

                      Cable!

I checked the manual, and emailed 3com before and couldnt get any luck with it. Do you work in a router shop or something? How do you have the manual?

I've never had any MTU problems with Live and my Linksys router but I checked the settings on it anyway and the MTU is set to auto.
