Japanese/USA Power in UK

Hey,

My mate is geting a USA Wii and was wondering if his stepdown converter he used for his Japanese Gamecube would work? I thought it might as I seem to remember that Japan and USA have the same power?

The only Jap thing I have is my PSP which I just switched the power plug on.

Yeah, JPN/USA are on the same power system, the stepdown converter he used previously for his GameCube will work fine, I'm doing the exact same thing actually!

The reason you only needed to swap the power cable on the PSP is because the power supply for the PSP is auto switching from 110v-240v.

Yep the PSP transformer is multi voltage, the Cube and Wii are not. The Wii is only 5W more than the Cube, so a 100W one still works fine.

PS3 - 171W
Wii - 17W

Yeah I think that's where the weirdly low figure came from. The actual transformer for the Wii says 53W.

Can I use gamecube power supply on Wii as Game sell them ? Just like to know if I can use that or not.

You cannot use a GameCube power supply on a Wii as the connector is different at the console end.

These were in in game figures. Standy usage is <10W for all three consoles with the Wii having the highest at about 7W.
I have read another test at digitaldisplacement that put the PS3 at 205w with the 360 and Wii as previously mentioned during 'normal' usage.
The above PS3 figure included BR playback.

No they do not AFAIK. I phoned them and they said they did not when I was looking for one.

When being used the PS3 uses approximately twice the power of the 360 (electricity, before anyone starts a war).

To test the power efficiency of my products, I used a simple test. I got a device that measures electrical usage. It's called the Kill A Watt. You plug one end into the wall and plug your device into the three-pronged socket on the Kill A Watt. Press the watt button and you can see how much electricity the device is using.

The game consoles yielded some predictable results. The Xbox 360 Elite came in at 194 watts. That's why it has the whirring fans inside the box as well as in the power supply that is inside the large "brick" in the power cord. The PlayStation 3 came in at 171 watts. But the Nintendo Wii consumed a measly 17 watts.

Do the fans in the 360 power supply actually run when it's on standby or just when it's doing something?

To my surprise, the biggest hog in the house was the toaster, which weighed in at 866 watts.

I suppose it's not that surprising really as with a toaster it's very short yet intense usage.

You have no idea just how bored I was to test the wattage on every electrical device in my house!
