    Itunes question

Is it possible to have two different installations of Itunes on one PC (or an alternative program), or otherwise can someone suggest a solution to the problem below?

Me and my gf have 2 ipods (one shuffle one nano) and use one version of itunes to put a random selection of music on every now and then. problem is that we'd both like to have some more music in that the other doesn't like, but then we'd end up with that on each others ipods which is no good. I'm looking for some way round it but don't know that much about what options there might be - any help?

What about creating a playlist in iTunes for each of you, and edit your music choices when necessary?

When it comes to synching the iPod, you can select specific playlists to be copied over, so that way, you could keep your music seperate.

      Yes.

I used to have iTunes on XP as an Admin and my sister had iTunes as a Guest on the same PC. They were idependent libraries.

Same as above. My wife and I both have an iPod sync'ed on the same installation, but under different profiles. It's not perfectly implemented, you can find the libraries bleed across if you have iTunes open while both accounts are logged on for example, but it's workable with some care.

If I create a playlist will Itunes still copy across a random selection from that playlist to each device?

We wouldn't use separate profiles for anything, though I guess I could always keep her on this one and make a different one just for me to use with Itunes - she wouldn't like any complications with her side of things but I reckon I could cope.

Thanks for the answers, I'd still probably prefer to have a third party piece of software that would do the job instead but if it doesn't exist I guess that's fair enough!

I'm not sure to be honest, although I'm thinking that it won't.

I suggested the playlist because I have about 12 set up on my copy of iTunes, and I can select (tick box) the ones I want copied to my iPod when it's connected.

The ticked lists are copied exactly as they are set up in iTunes, so I assume that a random selection won't be copied over, just what you specify.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

No probs, I appreciate the suggestion!

Re: different profiles - I've got it installed atm for "all users" afaik, if I make a new profile and install it again, can I do that for "this user" without damaging the other installation? Or is it a case of wiping it, and then doing it for each one separately?

If you're on a Mac, you can hold down Option (alt) when loading it, and it gives you the option of creating/loading another library. I'm not sure if that works on Windows or not?

Nice one - Alt doesn't work but shift does. We'll see how well it actually works, or whether they just bleed into one anyway, but it's looking promising. Thanks!

If you have it installed for all users you don't need to install it again.
Create a new user. log in as that user and start itunes. A new itunes library will be created for this user.
They will only bleed into each other if they are both open at the same time AND shared. Check the sharing options in Preferences.

The shift idea seemed to work perfectly - thanks for all the suggestions!
