Xbox 360 Headset Volume Amplifier?

When playing on live I still want to use/hear the voice facility and using voice through speakers sounds pathetically low volume, so I've decided the best option is to wear a mobile phone handsfree earpiece as my live headset replacement and wear the headphones over it.
The problem is, the volume of the voice you hear through the headset is and has always been very low. I can't believe in all the dash updates they've never allowed an option to increase it......Anyway, does anyone know of a tried and tested method of getting increased volume out of live chat?
I've considered plugging a headphone amp into the controller, but I don't know if it'll work as that's designed for stereo input whereas obviously I need mono input and output for the mic to work.
Any suggestions welcome.
