Connecting a 360 via a Virgin Broadband Modem

Ok, hooked my 360 up at the weekend to my Virgin Media Broadband modem. The machine detected the router but couldn't obtain an IP address.

What do I have to do?

I've not had to touch the router since I got it, it usually works fine and certainly didn't need any config stuff to connect it to my PC and wireless router.

Any ideas? Sorry if this is a noob question but I'm used to things you know, working, when I plug them in.

EDIT: It's actually my modem, not my router!

Have a wee look over at http://www.the-scream.co.uk/forums/f54.html? for networking advice with Virgin Media services.

I know that Telewest used to supply routers that were crippled to only work with one device at a time. Maybe the Virgin supplied box is the same?

You probably have to change the 360 network settings to automatic for the IP and DNS if you are plugging it straight into the router.

It's already set to that, I think.

            It's actually a modem, not a router! D'oh!

It's the Virgin Media 255, shown here:

See when you've unplugged whatever was attached and then plugged in the 360 did you pull out the power plug from the modem, leave it 10 seconds then reconnect ?

If not, that's your problem right there.

                I'd tried that too.

OK how about opening IE, sticking in the modem IP and trying the "reboot modem" option from there ?

Failing that, call virgin but they'll need you to have the PC connected to the modem to test it not the 360.

And yes, if your settings were manually input before set everything on the 360 to automatic !
