    PSP Memory stick problem.

When i try to write my Silent hill and RE3 PSONE files to my memory stick, it says "cannot copy eboot cyclic redundancy error" but i've already put FF7 on earlier today, and everything else works GBA emu etc.

Just got this memory stick today, 4gb, could it be a fake?

Does sound bad, it means it physically can't write to it. You get that messege when your hard drive in your PC is dying, for example.

What size does the PSP tell you the memory Stick is? Press triangle on it and select information to show you the true size...

If it's not taking both games due to the size then it probably will be a fake.

How much did you pay for it?

I'd think it was a fake for that price but it's no guarantee.

You have the full size which lessens the chance of a fake slightly as they are often 1GB.

Do you have another one that you could try to make sure that it's not the PSP connectors? The test it's failing is there to check for errors so it could be that.

Make sure the connectors are clean on the stick and that nothing is in the way of them while in the PSP. That's not easy but you may be able to spot something like fluff if you shine a light inside.

Can you test the stick in anything else too?

You sure the error relates to the memory stick and not your hard-drive ? like Shakey said you normally get that message with hard-drives and CD's.

Just transfered the same files across to the E drive and it worked, so it's not the hard drive.

Btw, when i press triangle for the settings, what should it say next to magic gate?

Also i've got no other card or writer.

I don't know about the error message so it could be a pc issue as the guys suggest.

If it has something to do with not being able to write to the stick itself then it's most likely a fake.

I believe that it's possible to 'fudge' lower capacity sticks so that they display a larger capacity. However, if you add anything to them after the true capacity has been reached then it's the equivalent of pouring more water into an already full glass......

The best way to tell if the stick is a fake is to go into the info settings (as previously mentioned by evo-one) but this time check if MagicGate shows as 'supported' or 'not supported'.....genuine cards should always show 'supported' and if it doesn't then it's a fake for sure.

That's not good but better than your hdd I guess......

Just been having a wee check & for Sony branded sticks if it says 'unsupported' or 'unknown' then it's defo a fake.

Can't find a definitive answer for Sandisk but my genuine Sandisk 4gb stick shows 'supported' so would imagine that the same thing applies for them too.

If you've just bought it then it's worth asking the seller for a refund.

Edit: if you manage to get your cash back then Play.com have 4gb sticks for £31.99 delivered. Probably as cheap as you'll get a genuine one for.

                      Sandisk also say Supported.

All official memory sticks need to be Magic Gate compliant.

So what can i do about this? My friend who bought one off this seller has the same unknown message i do.

Do paypal/ebay do anything if the seller won't?

Get in touch with the seller first, the chances are they won't do anything though but you may get lucky.

I'd then go via PayPal rather than eBay. Although they are run by eBay I've found that they seem to get things done a little quicker.

                            Emailed the guy saying:

"Hey i got this today, it was working fine and then it's giving me a "cyclic redundancy error" which apparantly means it physically won't write to the disc,

So in other words, it's broken.

How do i get a replacement?

                            Thanks"

                            I got this in reply:

                            "
Hi I don`t under stand your meaning we always check before dispatch the item our card 100% working
                            Thanks"

So i've replied again with this.

"Well, i checked it in the PSP menu by pressing triangle, and it says "Magicgate: Unknown" which basically means it's a fake stick.

And it's got the capacity of a 1gb card.

This was never mentioned in the listing, it said "4gb memory stick pro duo" so i'd like to return it and get a refund.

Or i could contact paypal/ebay about it, it's upto you.

                            Thanks."

                            Let's see what happens.

What's the point if he's only going to send me a replacement back though?
