S-Video Scart Adapters

If a TV doesn't have a S-video input, does the Scart adapter such as this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-SWV3...816952&sr=8-12

let the TV produce a signal as good as the S-video through Scart or does it downgrade it, meaning the adapter is just for convenience of not having to buy a Scart cable for the console.

Also, are there any (official) GameCube S-Video cables?

If the SCART socket accepts S-VHS then you're set, if not, then you're not. You need the adapter to physically change the shape of the socket to allow the S-VHS cable to connect to the TV.

You can get GC S-VHS cables, but not in the UK.

RGB SCART > S-Video. You can find RGB SCART cables for GC pretty easily on eBay or even from Amazon for under a fiver:

On most TV's, the first Scart socket is RGB-capable, and the second is S-Video capable. A Scart socket cannot be capable of both.

Also be aware that on some TV's, like Bravia's, both Scart sockets are RGB.

I'll have to check but I'm sure my old Sony portable here can do all three (composite, S-video, RGB) through the one scart socket...

Err no, not many TVs do S-Video over the SCART socket.

Its normally RGB/composite on socket 1, composite on socket 2...

Just get an RGB scart for your Gamecube, S-Video is nowhere near as good.

Every Sony I've ever come across that doesn't have an S-VHS socket will accept it over Scart. Dunno about other brands mind.

My old ?150 Hitachi did you just scroll through the av channels till it came up it wasnt an obvious feature....well it probably was if I read the manual, but really....manual?

No, what he meant was that scart cannot do RGB and s-video on the same socket. It's either one or the other. But as said I'll have to check my portable here and see if it managed to do all three on one socket...

S-Video is certainly possible via a RGB SCART socket but you will have to go into the TV menus to switch manually between the two. You can't just stick a SCART to S-Video adaptor or lead into a RGB SCART socket and get a S-Video output. For S-Video to work all equipment must be switched to S-Video, if capable, so, obviously, the TV must provide this option or it's no dice. Check the manual.

Most TVs I've owned haven't bothered with this facility and simply made the 2nd, non-RGB, SCART socket (if provided) S-Video capable.

However I've just checked the manual I kept for one (Grundig) of the 3 TVs I've owned with a single (RGB) SCART socket and that clearly states it is also S-Video capable via menu selection. I've never seen a TV with RGB/S-Video auto-switching.

BTW I'm fairly sure PAL Gamecubes had the S-Video option removed.

Yeah, you're right unfortunately....I used an official (Japanese) s-video lead with my ntsc cubes but it wouldn't work with my PAL GC. Same thing with the PAL N64 iirc.

I bought an S-video cable, it works with my PAL SNES and PAL N64 (no adapter - just through S-video input),though couldn't see any improvement when hooked up to the 64, but it still worked.
