XBOX DVD drive replacement

Hey there,

My trusty old PAL XBOX no longer reads discs and so the dvd drive needs replacing.

How easy is it to do this? what drives are compatible, is there a list and what are the best tutorials to use?

Any info gladly appreciated!

If you've replaced a PC DVD Drive before then you're pretty much halfway there. The Drive is the same apart from using a custom power connector so it's extremely simple.

You can use any manufacturer of drive with no problem, its a simple plug and play job on the original xbox.

Everything you need, including the screwdrivers if you don't already have them are available from Consolewerks.co.uk

Never modded before, i only get the 'disc is dirty, cannot read disc, plese insert xbox game disc' message so do i really need a whole new drive or can i just replace the laser, which is easier?

I've always thought that you have to have a specific Xbox drive. I know Thomson, Phillips, Samsung, have made them over the years.

Maybe he means that you can replace it with any of these. I think that any xbox, will take any of the above.
