My new Playstation 3 has a problem =o

FIRST CASUALTY OF THE PRICE DROP.

So I dug deep and found the cash to buy a PS3 today. I got it set up, running through a HDMI cable, and everything is cool. Got as far as the main screen and started looking through the options.

Thought I'd better try a game and went for Heavenly Sword. Put it in, and it wants to update, so I let it. Few minutes later, it updates fine, resets itself, and when it comes back on everything is jittery and flickering to black. So now I am troubled.

I'm away to try it again, maybe with the standard cables, but I'm not optimitic.

Any ideas? Should I call in the warranty now or wait until I finish my cup of tea?

    help =(

You're dealing with a nitwit here. Which button do I hold for 5 seconds and how does that help?

So, I went back and it started up fine. But being a cynic, I turned it off and tried again to see if it was fluke, and it was. It's still jittery and flickering, and there's little to no sound. As far as I can tell it's still set up for HDMI 1080i, but the flickering to black is almost permenant now. I can hardly navigate the options to try anything.

I also can't get it to display through the yellow/red/white scart, to see if its maybe just a dodgy gamestation hdmi cable.

          see you in 10mins...

With the PS3 in standby (red power light on), hold the touch sensitive power button on the front of the machine. As soon as you touch it you'll hear a beep, keep holding until you hear a second beep, then release.

I think it attempts to detect your display connection.

Yeah, I tried that and it has worked, kinda. The PS3 displays fine on the lowest resolution setting, but if I select anything from 720p and up, it goes all flickery again.

I'm guessing that's software, not the cable, right?

Is there a way to restore the original factory firmware, and try again I guess?

No you can't rollback a firmware update.

Take it back and get a replacement it sounds ****ed !

I'm not sure what that problem is to be honest. Have you tried resetting the console to factory settings?

No, no roll back to earlier versions.

You tried a different HDTV (if you have one?) That would defo tell you whether it's the machine or not.

                      Cables plugged in fine.

I don't have another HDTV to try, but the console displayed perfectly until I updated. So I'd doubt the console first.

I'll take it back to the store tomorrow for an exchange, and see if they can test it.

Can I ask for a replacement from a store (gamestation), or do they leave you hanging and make you refer to the guarrantee?

For something that's failed (Assuming they can verify) so close to purchase, demand a replacement.

Bad luck dude. They're generally solid machines. You must be one of the unlucky few :-(
