    Blu-Ray on SD over SCART

    Hi all,

I recently imported a PS3 from VG+ on the advice in the FAQ section on this forum. Very happy, thanks for the info!

I don't have a HDTV yet. Games work fine over RGB SCART, but for some reason when I play Blu-Ray movies or DVDs, everything goes green.

There is a little flicker, as if the video mode is changing. Perhaps it is switching to composite and my TV won't display composite NTSC, or perhaps something else is wrong.

So this is a warning to anyone who wants to try the same thing.

And wondering if anyone knows what might be happening, or if there might be some workaround to make the PS3 output in RGB when playing movies.

This used to happen when using DVD's on a PS2.

There was a false rumour that this was Macrovision kicking in, but the console simply reverted to YPbPr (i.e Component) mode instead of RGB like it should. Most modchips got around this with a simple wire, though this broke Component mode then.

Fast reply, thanks! I didn't think about component and it would make sense and explain the green. So I searched for that issue and found this:

You can convert Component to RGB with an ?80 gadget:

Then I tried searching for "PS3 green screen" (which I didn't think of before) and got this:

Looks like colours might come back if I select composite (which I didn't try before because I assumed it was my TV not coping with NTSC).

I'll try it when I get home tonight.

You are right! A lot of third parties developed a PS2 RGB Scart with a 'DVD Mode' switch, which simply switched the cable to Composite!

DVD Region X actually booted them in proper RGB by intercepting the signal, but that's PS2-only.

Well, switching to composite didn't work -- I get green screen even on games on this mode.

My current hypothesis is that my TV is still looking for RGB and finding component. I need to try again with the PS3's composite lead and get a composite to SCART converter for my TV.

Do US Ps3's even output RGB?
It wouldn't suprise me if they don't considering the crippled SD PAL PS3's with their lovely 50hz only mode.

US PS3s do indeed output RGB, and the RGB to SCART PS2/3 lead works just fine. But only for games and playing videos from the hard disk.

When playing a DVD or BD it switches to component mode.

However, I have now found that a composite signal is also available. I used the PS2/3-to-composite lead that came with my PS3 and connected it to a composite-to-SCART adaptor (my TV doesn't have composite input) and this worked.

Or it would have if my TV could cope with NTSC composite. Now I have a black and white picture instead of a green one.

Oh well -- the HDTV will be arriving in a few weeks!
