Hi all,
I would like to make the best possible Dreamcast console, that is region free and plays all games at their best. I have put my main questions in bold text as this post ended up being a lot longer than I had planned, sorry!
Ive already decided I am going to modchip it in order to make it region free - as I cant be doing with boot disks. I have read about the region changer disk - but it still doesnt make it 'region free'
However, I dont know if I should modchip a US or UK machine? As I have read the each can have compatability problems with certain region games.
Also, what exactly does the R422 mod do/change? :-
I have read allsorts of conflicting information from "it converts NTSC to PAL" to "it just changes NTSC to PAL60" and "it switches between 50hz and 60hz"
Some people suggest just soldering the R422 points up, but ravengames suggest fitting a switch as they say:-
We can also fit a 50/60hz switch for Japanese/USA owners. This is handy for some pieces of software like the UK passport disc, because when running at 60hz the text is not viewable at the top and bottom of the screen so you'll need to run this in 50hz mode to read everything correctly.
So which is best and what does the R422 mod actually do?
I also plan of fitting two rechargeable AA batteries for the internal battery so I dont keep getting asked for the date and time
I also would like to use a VGA box, but wondered if it would be better to use an external VGA box, or fit an internal one? If I fitted an internal VGA port, would this disable ths standard AV port, or could I still use it for RGB Scart? as I guess this would be better for the games that dont support VGA mode, as external VGA boxes only support S-Video. Also, if I fiited an internal VGA port, is it still possible to have a switch to trick some games into loading in VGA?
Lastly, Just in case I ever decide to use it - can you still solder the R512 points and use a region changer disk with a modchipped console? and if so would it be worth me soldering the R512 points whilst I have it open? (I have also read that you should fit a switch for this too so that you dont accidentally write over the Flash memory)
Sorry for such a long post and thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give me
