What's that iPod DAC mod thingy?

You know, that hardware mod people have done that's supposed to iron out the cheapness to compliment the really good DAC on the current/last gen of iPod?

I ask because I had a demo of a Fatman iTube on the weekend (coupled with a pair of B&W 686s) and I was seriously impressed. I recall being fairly impressed by the sound of the hardware mod and was wondering if it'd be a good idea to have that done 'n' all.

iMod from Red Wine - http://www.redwineaudio.com/iMod.html

I have wondered if such a mod would be worthwhile before. Everything on my iPod is encoded in lossless.

A couple of years back my other half used her iPod instead of the CD player in her Denon system because the sound off the iPod was better!

I wonder if such a mod would make my iPod and XA-2 amp sound better than using the matching X-Ray CD player?

Not entirely sure it'd be for me in combination with the iTube then. A few words about that, btw, it's an incredibly good piece of kit for the money. I was totally shocked that it wasn't crap, it does what it says on the tin and produces good warm sound and was fine driving the 686s to moderate volumes!

this sounds pretty cool. 2 questions though:

        1) will i benefit given all my mp3s are encoded at 128kbps - 192kbps
        2) i use the stock headphones most of the time and only sometimes use a pair of shure.

dont really intend to use it with a proper speaker setup.
