    Xbox LIVE help

I'm having a 'mare trying to connect.

The way I've set it up, is to have my laptop connected to the internet, and then the network cable connected from the 360 into the laptop. This is the only possible way for me to do it at the moment, without buying some more equipment.

I've got Tesco Broadband, using this modem:

My console keeps failing the IP test, and despite following the instuctions on xbox.com, I'm still having no luck.

Is anybody else connected this way, or is this way of connecting just not very good?

Is there any cheap alternative ways to connect (i.e with a wireless thingy) which would make it easier to connect, or would I still have the same problems with that?

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

My first thought would be to manually put in the details on XBL, I remember Tesco having problems if you didn't put in the DNS numbers too.

Is it a USB modem? I used to be with Tesco and connected my Mac and Xbox via internet connection sharing. It was so long ago I really can't remember. Do a search I'm pretty sure it'll unearth something.
To be honest, I'd save yourself the stress and buy a modem router! How long have you been with Tesco? Surely they don't still send out USB modems? My last one from them was wireless.

Does the connection have to go from the laptop ?? I'm certainly no expert, but is the IP address failing because it's assigned to the laptop ? (Again I may be TOTALLY wrong)......it would be easier to link the xbox direct.....not meaning to pimp my **** but I have a very cheap wireless router that may work -

Wouldn't be wanting much either......but anyway. I've not helped really have I?!

Yes it is a USB modem. The only place I can plug the xbox ethernet cable into is the side of the laptop, as there is simply no where else for it to go.

I tried entering the details manually onto the xbox, but I don't know where to find the Gateway info or DNS settings on my laptop. Any ideas?

I'm really not sure how long I've been with Tesco. It's got to be around 12 months now.

Tesco DNS used to be, and probably still are:
          Primary DNS Server 194.168.4.100
          Secondary DNS Server 194.168.8.100

Or try putting in open dns numbers if you have any probs.
Predict and prevent attacks before they happen using our cloud-delivered enterprise security service. Protect any device, anywhere with OpenDNS.

          208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

Thanks for the help so far. Could the problem be because my broadband is dial up?

When I click on 'Network Connections' on my laptop my Tesco broadband is listed under Dial-up.

Then when I plug the ethernet cable in, that is listed under 'Lan or High speed internet' as a local area connection, although it does say underneath 'Limited or no connectivity'.

If they are both trying to access the internet using the same IP could that casue the problem?

The actual error message I get on my xbox is 'Your gateway did not respond to a network request'

It's really starting to annoy me now. Anyone would think MS don't want my money!

Dial up broadband? I don't think that's right. What speed are you on?
Don't forget you need to enable internet sharing. It's been covered here quite a few times by people who know there stuff. Do a search it'll help you no end.

That's plenty, I was on this until recently. It shouldn't be on dial up though, are you sure you set it up correctly?

                  This should sort you out.

                        FFS!

I turned off the laptop, took it upstairs so I can play on my HDTV, and now it's failing the DNS test again. I've tried the open numbers again, but it doesn't work.

It'll be because your computer has been given a new ip?
On the Xbox setup, choose automatic for ip address just do manual for the dns stuff.
Basically, do automatic setup and edit the dns to manual and key in the ones you used ealier.

I've turned off my firewall and now it works using the same settings as earlier. Is this safe to do?

I don't care if it isn't safe really, as I'm going to do it anyway

                            Thanks again bignige!

                              Problems are not over yet.

I bought an extension cable with an inbuilt ADSL filter (whatever that is) so I could take the laptop upsatairs and use LIVE on my HD, but am having awfull problems with the internet disconnecting every 10 minutes or so. Could this be due to the extension cable?

If I was to leave the laptop downstairs where it seems to work ok, and buy a 20m ethernet cable, would that work?

                              Thanks in advance.
