PC Woes - Device Manager/Network Connections

Daughter switched her PC off on Tuesday night, all was working fine. She switched it on last night and there are no Network Connections, for some reason it won't let me add any network connections - I click the add connection link, it hangs for 5 seconds then does nothing.

To top it all off when I go to System/Device Manager not one single item is listed.

She's using XP, I've checked all the cabling, the network port is built in to the motherboard - the light comes on when the cable is plugged in so assume it's working OK.

I'm no PC expert and am at work all day but would appreciate some suggestions/help for things to try tonight please.

It's a problem some systems had after an update.

Thank you b_k that link was spot on, for some reason 99% of the stuff listed was disabled, she changed it all to automatic again and everything works a treat.
