Power requirements for a US Wii

    Hi Guys and Gals,

I am in the fortunate position of getting a spanking new Wii from the Us this week. Now I have a US Gamecube and I have been running it using an official power adapter from a UK Gamecube, as I understand that the internal power of a Cube automatically switched over.

Is this the same case for the Wii? Can I use a UK Wii power supply from Nintendo UK? Or do I have to use a transformer?

    Thanks for any guidance.

    emissary.

A 50W stepdown will do it. Better still buy a third party UK Wii PSU from eBay. Cheap as chips!

Or buy an official one from Nintendo (phone them up).

Just to clarify your understanding, US or UK, both consoles take the same voltage input (12V @ 3.25A). Nothing happens in the console. It's just the power block that has to cope with a different input (110V or 240V) and do the conversion to 12V. Weeeee

A 50W stepdown won't do, you should go for 100W (the Wii has a rating of 53W). Or as said get a cheap UK supply instead.

          I use one of these:

The UK's No. 1 electronics specialist. Free UK delivery on orders over £35. Explore our extensive selection of tech essentials including batteries, cables, PC & mobile accessories, cameras, audio equipment, electricals, and storage furniture. Visit us today!

Only a tenner and rated up to 100w, so you can use it for pretty much any imported console up to the last gen - you'll need something a lot beefier to run an imported 360 or PS3 though.

            Thank you gents,

So from what you have stated, if I ring Nintendo Uk and ask for a Wii PSU then like the Gamecube it should work fine, correct?

Or I can spend a tenner and get the transformer from Maplin as per MattyDs link.

Excellent, thank you gentlemen (and ladies if that was the case). Now I just have to sourcce a cheap wii component cable.

Game own-brand ones are about £8-£10 in store. Or the official one is about £14 on Play Asia. Personally I think a component cable's a component cable so I went with the cheapo one - as the console is only outputting 480p it's really not going to make any difference.
