There is a way of doing it but it requires a scart box with phono outputs, a second scart to scart rgb cable, a stereo phono to 3.5 mm cable and 3.5mm to 3.5 mm coupler adaptor.

Basically you plug the 360's rgb cable into the scart box and run the second rgb cable from the scart box to your TV, then connect the phono to 3.5mm cable with the coupler fitted at the end to the scart box's phono outs and that will allow you to hook up some headphones. Providing you already own some headphones you can probably find the lot on eBay for around £25 to £30.

Interesting...I'd ideally like a more elegant solution but that is certainly worth bearing in mind.

According to the faq it's a full 21pin passthrough, so you'd still get RGB, it's small enough to not need any space allocated to it, all you'd need is a pair the phono > 3.5mm connector as mentioned above.

Awesome! Looks like we have a winner - plus I can then use my Wii with that as well, not to mention any other console I wish to hook up.

One question - where do the headphones get their power from using this setup? The amp is inside the telly and there's no amp on the 360...so what will the sound be like do you think?

You won't need an amp to power the headphones, just a stereo phono to 3.5 mm cable and 3.5mm to 3.5 mm coupler adaptor (gender changer) or, even better, a stereo phono to female 3.5mm jack cable (but these are difficult to come by). Sound quality will be identical to plugging your phones in to a TV.

Well spank my bottom and call me Mavis, this looks full of WIN!

Thanks for the clarification, Charlie! I already own a phone to 3.5mm lead (and a bloody good one at that) so all I need is the adapter and the male to female 3.5mm gender changer. Sorted. Will order these now!

                EDIT: Good old ebay:
